KC is legit one of my favorite DC stories. And I know
@RockVolnutt have had our discussions about comics before, but KC is one of those I would definitely put as very - VERY hard to adapt.
Part of that is because it was written by comic book fans, for comic book fans. There's tons of references and callbacks to things in comics at the time. It's not 100% necessary to get them to follow the story, but there's a lot of layers and subtext you're just going to miss or not understand without that knowledge.
And the whole thing just requires so much set up to establish and build the world for the stakes of the story, there's just also no way you'd be able to do it justice in a 2 hr film. You would have to have a trilogy of films or a prestige series - basically 6-10 hrs of run time to even begin to approach this. Oh sure you can try and trim it down to "just the highlights" but the resulting film is then going to suck. Much of it will make no sense to people or - at best - it's going to be completely forgettable with none of the emotional impact the source has. It would be the essence of "cargo-cult writing" with all of the form, none of the function.
Now I could be wrong, but Gunn also strikes me as just... wrong for the project. KC is something you'd want Nolan on (and that's not just me being a Nolan fanboy). KC is a dead serious story. The humor in it is
very sparse and
very dry - most of it follows after the climax actually in the coda. If anything, humor in it is used ironically - as a sign of people being unaware of ignorant of what's going on. I don't hate the films Gunn has done, I think he's pretty great when he stays in his lane. I just doubt he has the maturity and nuance to take on this story.
Oh wait - the story is all serious and we know how Bob is all "hur durr, comics are weird and dumb, brighten up the serious story! you can't have maturity in capeshit!" He's probably actually looking forward to Gunn putting the Whedon treatment to KC! Which just makes me even angrier!
