Well, we have a doozy here. First, Palantir the company, was founded by Bob archnemesis Peter Thiel, who is a "conservative libertarian" which to Bob means Peter Thiel is Evil Incarnate and spawn of the Devil. Thiel is also gay, but this does not absolve him in any way, much like it doesn't absolve Glenn Greenwald, and to top it all off, Thiel is also a Believer .

Now, Bob misunderstood the Palantir objects in Lord of the Rings, very clearly. I think he's relying more on the Peter Jackson movies than the books here, because Saruman uses a Palantir, and Sauron influences people through them. Bob doesn't understand that this isn't a property of the Palantir itself, but of Sauron. Even Sauron can't make the Palantir "lie" or create false images, so this speaks to the object itself not being evil. Hell, it's not even explicitly stated, IIRC, that Palantir are evil. Hell, I can't even remember if Palantir were named in the movies.

But that scene also explicitly says the danger from the Palantiri is "they are not all accounted for, we do not know who else may be watching," not that they're EVIL.

They're really fairly complex devices, with a long history and a lot of nuances about who has the right to use them and how they worked. (For instance, Denethor's premature aging stemmed in part from using a Palantir rightfully, but without as much right as an actual King of one of Elendil's realms, while Saruman may have been corrupted and was certainly more easily fooled because he had no right to use them at all.) But you have to read the books to have an inkling of any of this, and probably some of the supplemental material, particularly the section that covers them in Unfinished Tales. And I would bet my right nut that Bob has not actually read Lord of the Rings, and I'd bet my entire head that he's never read Unfinished Tales.

Note: I also think it's possible that Bob does in fact understand a bit more about the Palantiri (a trip to Wikipedia or any of the Tolkien wikis would tell him all of this and more), but because he arrogantly believes people always take the stupidest, most basic interpretations from popular movies, he's deliberately "talking down" what their significance is.

The Defense Network is named after *this* the idea that you can use them to see all over Middle Earth. What Sauron did to Saruman and Denethor was show them a limited picture. Probably the forces of orcs and men and other foul things he had gathered in Mordor.

This is important, because an observant person will realize that Saruman and Denethor aren't being controlled. But, they do often speak of the doom of man. Which, is exactly what Sauron wants. If he has to fight a fair war. He has a real chance of losing. He himself is barely alive and his old armies are barely existent. But Sauron isn't the deceiver for nothing. He didn't get Numenor wiped off the map because he was good at war. Woulda gotten away with enslaving those elves if it weren't for Gil Galad and his pesky She-elf too. So, his plan is to take the already divided Free Peoples of Middle Earth and make them not want to fight.

An important thing about Lord of the Rings too is blind luck. And seizing it. Because he was gonna have a hard time with this plan until Saruman and Denethor just so happened to find their Palantiri and use it. Then all of a sudden Sauron had the perfect plan. It was his own little Schlieffen Plan. Destroy the Rohirrim, pin down Gondor.

Also another thing tying these all together, like @Mola Ram said. The Palantiri can't lie, but you are responsible for understanding what you see. Which what Sauron exploited, he was exploited by. Because Pippin getting connected to Sauron, Sauron saw a Hobbit who knew about the ring. And it caused him to act recklessly. He flushed out Mordor and gave Frodo and Sam the opportunity they needed.

This is all to say that Bob is fundamentally opposed to understanding that one of the key points of Tolkien is that nothing is inherently evil. It is only stuff that has been corrupted and misused. And that misuse thing is important. Because while it seems evil has all the advantages. It is frequently blinkered and fragile. Like say for example, advocating for the genocide of a region to further our side is not something that would be coming from one of The Fellowship's mouth.

I could nitpick a few things here and there, but since this isn't a Tolkien thread I'll just say this is an excellent overview of both the mechanics and themes of the Palantiri and how abysmally Bob misunderstands both.

Boromir I actually like quite a lot; even as a kid on my first reading it felt like the guy had a sign taped to his head reading I WILL STEAL THE RING. I felt like the movie communicated his conflicted nature quite well, largely because Sean Bean's performance is downright staggering. Better than David Wenham or John Noble. The departures from the book they took with Faramir were irritating, but I appreciated the opportunity to actually see Osgiliath on screen. Denethor is just unforgivable.

I think the worst sin is the failure to effectively show that Arnor even existed. The relationship between the two kingdoms and the line of Anarion and the line of Isildur is incredibly complicated, but it felt like there was barely even an effort to tell that story.
