What a lot of people don't realize about the Westboro Baptist Church, is that it was a scam. Phelps spent the 60's and 70's suing businesses in the south for not having black employees. Running a scam where he would get a black guy with a tailored resume to apply for jobs, and if he didn't get an offer, he would sue. It's kind of like how lawyers sue businesses for a lack of wheelchair access and settle for a small amount, usually 10k.
