I think he's trying to argue that China is more diverse than people think by having so many different ethnic groups make it up. The problem that Bob isn't pointing out is that of these 50 plus recognized ethnic groups in China, none of them come even close to having the total population makeup that the Hans do in China. The Wikipedia article on the different ethnic groups that China recognizes has the Hans at over 1.2 billion as of 2010, which makes up nearly 92% of the country.

A lot of these other ethnic groups aren't considered Chinese by the way, they are just citizens of China. Asia just has a lot of different ethnic groups and cultures that exist within it. Unfortunately they all aren't big enough to have their own nations so a lot of them just have to be apart of the bigger ones such as China.

There actually are other ethnic groups that are considered Chinese, but those are groups descended from the Hans that live in different parts of Asia outside of China. That guy from Indiana Jones that just one the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor is from one of them.

I think I get what he's saying. The problem is while his argument might be (barely) comprehensible, it's almost impossible to apply to Star Trek. Sure, the American Cold War identity informed the depiction of the Federation, particularly in TOS, but the conflict itself is barely background material. Such a metaphor would require a low intensity, unresolvable military dispute behind the scenes, occasionally flaring into overt warfare, but this doesn't describe anything in TNG or TOS. Who would the antagonist be? I suppose the Klingons in TOS (certainly the last TOS film adopted the Klingons as an obvious USSR stand-in with no reservations), but in both series there's no consistent adversary. The dangers of the unknown are much greater.

Amusingly, Bob's analysis might apply to DS9, what with the Dominion War, but that's a much more overt conflict than the Cold War ever was, with a slow erosion of willpower and strength over the course of years rather than a final apocalyptic event looming on the horizon. His actual analysis of DS9 strongly suggests he's never seen it. I haven't seen Voyager, so I can't comment on what he says about it.

Honestly, if not for Bob's TNG boner I'd wonder if he ever saw any Trek outside the films. His analysis is complete nonsense.

The worst part is you just know he was smirking to himself as he drooled this out, chortling over how brilliant he is.
