Bob is really, REALLY, REAAAAAAALLY FUCKING STUPID.
It was NOT "The Tree of Knowledge".

IT WAS THE TREE OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOOD AND EVIL.

Bob's so fucking stupid, he forgot what the tree was actually called and thus made a ridiculous Atheism 101 assumption about "knowledge" and the Bible. The tree itself wasn't "bad", just eating from it was because God told Adam and Eve NO. Which Bob can't comprehend either, because his austistic narcissistic ass hates being told NO, too.

Up to that point, Adam and Eve knew only Good. They neither knew nor comprehended Evil. Once they ate that fruit however, you better believe they comprehended Evil.

Bob also doesn't understand that eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil would KILL Adam and Eve (eventually - temporal death) and it would separate them from God (eternal death). It's not about the tree, though, it's about obeying God.
Would there have been a time where eating of the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil would have been allowed (presumably once Adam and Eve could "handle" it)? We are not told. Possibly. It's hard to say.

Bob studied "Seminary Level" bible stuff? HORSE. SHIT. If he'd studied anything remotely that hardcore, he'd have never said anything so fucking ridiculous. The Tree of Life was the "good" one, yes, but once the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil's fruit had been consumed, God had to bar humanity from the Tree of Life for a damn good reason. The fruit of the Tree of Life would cause one to live forever, and in the fallen state humanity found itself in after Adam and Eve disobeyed and ate the wrong fruit, it would be a catastrophe. It would have rendered humankind IRREDEEMABLE. And I refuse to believe that the nuns at the catholic school Bob attended were so fucking incompetent that they would have simply called it "The Tree of Knowledge".
Bob has NOT done any seminary level study. As proof, I'll just quote a transcript from two priests and their podcast:

Fr. Stephen: The tree of the knowledge of good and evil itself is talking about this issue of maturity, because everywhere else where that phrase, “the knowledge of good and evil, knowing good and evil” occurs in the Old Testament, it’s referring to maturity. Isaiah 7: “A child will be born. Before he is old enough to choose the good and reject the evil, this will happen”: before he comes of age, before he reaches maturity. So the Fathers are all very clear, and even before that, Second Temple literature is very clear, that the tree of knowledge of good and evil is not itself evil, that it represents a knowledge…
Fr. Andrew: I was going to say, why would God have put a poisonous tree in the middle of the garden of Eden?
Fr. Stephen: [Laughter] Right. It’s that this was knowledge that they weren’t ready for yet; this was a level of maturity that they hadn’t reached yet, and they were trying to seize it before God knew they were ready for him to give it to them.
So his commandment to them was more of a warning. It was not like, “I’m going to just arbitrarily set a test for them by saying: You know what? You can eat all the other trees; don’t eat this one.”
Fr. Andrew: Well, I mean, you know, those of us who are parents, it’s the same thing. It’s like: “Look, you’re not ready for that yet.” It’s not like I’m tempting my kids by having a car in the garage and they know where the keys are, right? I didn’t buy a car in order to send them into ruin. I mean, obviously the analogy doesn’t totally hold in every way, but, yes, they’ve seen me start the car, they could probably—not my toddler, but the three older kids could probably go in there and start the car. They could do that. They’ve seen me do it enough, they’ve seen my wife do it enough, but we didn’t buy the car in order to send them into ruin, but what we do tell them is: There is going to come a day when you’re going to be ready for this. You’re going to have this ability, you’re going to have this permission, and it’s going to be fruitful for everybody, God willing. [Laughter] I don’t have any drivers just yet, but we’re only maybe a year or two away from it. Oh, man.
But I mention that just to stave off some people. Obviously, again, the analogy does not hold in every way. They’d be like: “Well, why would God have put that tree there if he knew that Adam and Eve were going to do this?” But it was there because it was going to be for them. They just weren’t… They were seizing it, and he told them, “Don’t do that.” He didn’t hand them the keys to the car and say, “Now this is how it all works. Don’t go do it.” It wasn’t like that.
Fr. Stephen: Right. And that’s the devil’s whole presentation. “If you eat this, you could leap-frog all this hard work stuff.” [Laughter] “You could leap-frog all this subduing and all of that. You could just become like God right off the bat.”
Of course, I do find it amusing how apt that last paragraph is there towards Bob, because if there's one thing this thread has proven, he cannot stand hard work.

I agree with Shrader to a point, but not for the same reasons. 70's films were very dour and the ones he mentioned, you would only really know if you were a massive film buff(or lying). The 70's gave us Rocky, The Godfather, The French Connection, Serpico, Dog Day Afternoon, Dirty Harry, The Deer Hunter, gritty films where the American decay was evident. Those are some of the standout American films of the 1970's. You could also make those films for even after inflation, less than the cost of an episode of tv nowadays. Which meant you could cultivate a different audience, every film didn't need to make a billion dollars.

I think Shrader is playing it a little safe with the politics. Those films that he mentioned had a small audience, that was mostly rich and reflected their issues, a steel worker in Pennsylvania is not going to see a melodrama about wife swapping. While the ones I mentioned, had issues that reflected normal people. It's the high art, vs low art argument, snobs vs the slobs. For ages we realized that there were different audiences, for different genres, different subjects. But for some reason, people think today, that if you put a black woman in a spy movie, black women will come to see it. News flash...they won't.

So many of today's writers don't understand the audience they are writing for, and when it doesn't get mass appeal, they call the audience sexist and racist. No one wants to watch a movie about gay, black, drug dealers trying to open a bed and breakfast in Vermont. Not because they are homophobic, but because it sounds fucking boring. Maybe critics will like it, because they enjoy the drama and the examination of WASP America through the lens of black sodomy. Not exactly a big audience film, and there is the problem with entertainment. So many people want to write something big and important to get ass pats from people who will pretend to like it. Rather than write something entertaining that could be considered schlock.

Bingo. I've also heard this described as the "sci-fi paradox."

I'll probably butcher it but it goes something like, what attracts fans to sci-fi (and fantasy) are the big imaginative ideas and the examination of things beyond our every day lives. Well if you want to make a movie about that stuff, it's going to cost money. A lot of money. Yes costs have come down and made things affordable, but a CGI dragon is still majorly expensive compared with just sticking a human in front of a camera. So if you're going to do a speculative fiction movie, it's going to cost a LOT of money.

Which means you need to MAKE a lot of money to turn a profit. Which means you need to get more people to see the film. So you have a take a story which had an appeal to a sizeable, but limited audience, and start "dumbing" it down so the broader audience will all turn out and give you the profit. But then you risk alienating the core fandom and still losing money. I mean just look at Nolan. Inception, Interstellar, and TENET are absolutely some of the smartest scifi films with major budgets put to screen in recent memory, really pushing the envelope in how complex their ideas are - and people still don't get or mock those films. (I'm not saying you have to like them, but I'm shocked at how many people will put down the films for stuff that was explained within them, like their brains literally overloaded and shut off partway through.)

Star Wars and Marvel certainly hit that sweet spot of being speculative fiction, with stories made simple enough they had mass, broad appeal and became franchise juggernauts for a time. For a real clear example, just look at Star Trek: First Contact. Go bring it up on the thread on here, and you'll probably get a few treatises on all it's faults. But then to this day I can still recall a classmate who never liked - even mocked Trek - coming to school one day, going, "Man I saw that movie and it was pretty bad ass! I loved it!" (And it was the highest worldwide gross of the TNG films.)

Cohen brothers are another good example as they seemed to have a system of making a movie with broad appeal to rake in the $$$$, and then follow it up with a more personal movie that only like... 3 people would watch. (Followed by another popular film, repeat)

It's something GBF talked about in his recent vid on a Roger Corman film. Corman was first and foremost about that dollar but he trained a lot of talents in discipline and realism about the business and the craft. If Bob ACTUALLY had any sense about the business, he too would be talking about how projects need to manage their expectations. But instead he's taken the view a lot of his ilk have - that these aren't products to be sold and bought by the customer, these are sermons by which the congregation should be attending to prove their goodness. They don't see the audience as paying to be entertained, but as putting money into the collection plate which they better do if they want to be saved.

Me and the other two Cohen brothers fans agree with your assessment. We're all in a group chat.

Fast and Furious is popular because it tells a stupid ass story VERY well. On paper it shouldn't work yet it does. I say that as a fan. It has buff men, hot women, fast cars, cool guns, big planes, NUCLEAR SUBS, visits a vast array of locations, and FAMILY. What is not to like? To play devil's advocate for a moment, the modern workplace is terrible, and many in the younger generation are picking up on that. There's a movement called FIRE spreading among the youngsters. FIRE stands for Financially Independent, Retired Early, and it's exactly what it says on the box. By living a life of hyper-frugality and saving huge amounts of their paycheck (up to 75%!), they retire in seven to ten years and never work again (or only work on things they love.) There's a website called Mr. Money Moustache that was an early proponent of early, frugal retirement.

On the other hand, FIRE requires hard work, discipline, and self-denial, all of which Robert hates.
