Bob intimated at different times that there was something big going on in the background that I think he hoped would pay off huge, but it fizzled out and Bob blamed Coof. To this day I don't think anyone knows exactly what was going on. From the sound of what he was going on about, it sounded like he was trying to help start a new movie production or studio. Maybe something Indy.
But personally, I think it's more likely that some regular bread-and-butter job Bob had pre-coof lowkey fired him or went under and had to fire everyone, and Bob blamed the coof. I say this ONLY because Bob claimed it was his "livelihood" so it was probably a regular old-style brick-and-mortar job. Like retail or some shit.

If Bob really did have something cooking in the background, he would inevitably screw it up. After all, his early gigs as a corporate video maker should have set him up for ongoing big success, but he couldn't stick the landing. As far as I can tell, he didn't need a big skill improvement to keep on going, just some minimal social awareness and a work ethic. But Bob believes, "Work is the curse of the drinking class," and he has the social awareness of Travis Bickle on a bad day.
