It's not the first time I've heard this criticism (pretty sure there were some articles posted in A&N that had the same take), but that wasn't the point of the movie. It was called Oppenheimer, not The Manhattan Project or A Graphic Portrayal of the Nuking of Hiroshima and Nagasaki or whatever. The focus was primarily on the man himself and his struggles, then secondarily on the development and completion of the first atomic bomb, because that's the story that Nolan wanted to tell. There's plenty of media on the actual bombings and their aftermath that you can seek out and watch instead.

I think the way Nolan handled Oppenheimer's personal reaction to the bomb was better than a hypothetical scene showing the devastation after the blasts and irradiated Japanese dying. If you haven't seen it, as he was giving a speech congratulating those who worked on the project, he started to imagine them burning to death in nuclear fire, walking past their charred bodies as he left the auditorium. It showed his understanding that what he had helped to create could easily hurt his colleagues, his family, and anyone else he knew, which fueled his attempts after the fact to prevent nuclear proliferation. He wouldn't have had the same attachment to viewing images of those who died in Japan, even if he would have known they were also human beings that were injured or killed. It's visual storytelling that works very well, in my opinion.

So yes, Spike Lee's entitled to his opinion, but I'm also entitled to my own that he didn't get it.

I decided to try and 'catch up' on the MCU since I'm watching it in release order and am about a year behind. I saw Guardians 3 but that works as its own thing. Wondering how much I had to go, I looked into how many projects were released this year and was surprised at how little it was. Three movies when The Marvels comes out, and maybe only two show seasons, Secret Invasion and Loki. I say maybe because apparently What If? season two is happening late December but nothing has been confirmed. Echo has been pushed back to next year, and with the strike on, nothing is getting made or re-shot.

Bob must be pissed. Thanks to Covid, the MCU had four movies and five shows in 2021, and then 3 movies, 3 shows and two specials, one by his majesty James Gunn, in 2022. Now the output is going down and the Chuds who dared criticize the quality of his precious MCU are being proven to be right. But, he'll probably just blame "the plague" and other shit rather than admit that he was wrong.

It has the usual problems magazines of that ilk have of being biased. I remember I was subscribing to some Linux magazine which went under, so they replaced my subscription's remaining issues with a subscription to Wired. I got an issue in the mail, it had some annoying troll article in it, and I was annoyed enough to complain and have them cancel the few issues I was going to get and give me a refund. Of course, that was definitely over a decade ago, so maybe they've improved since then.

Of course, anything MovieBob decides to write about technology usually has the same, or worse, effect than that Wired article I referenced, so the last thing I want to hear is his take.
