The context of that particular joke was, comedian Henny Youngman in the 1930s told what could be described as "misdirection" jokes. Like, you'd expect him to say one thing in a succession, but it takes a left turn for the audience in terms of what they expected him to say. For example, "The doctor gave a guy 6 months to live, but he couldn't pay his bill, so the doctor gave him another 6 months". The "Take my wife, please" started out as a misunderstanding. He took his wife to a radio show and asked a stage hand to escort his wife to a seat. The stage hand, being familiar with Youngman's routines, thought the dude was joking, and thus a meme was born that morphed into a misdirection joke where the context is using his wife as an example for something, ie "Take my wife" but then tacking on "please" as in, take my wife off my hands (not necessarily by fucking her, this was the 1930s after all).
