Yes, unfortunately. Fortunately it's only gotten as far Godzilla and King Kong though that's probably because no body remembers Gamera and how he's friend to children everywhere. With the short supply of successful kaiju they're probably gonna be stuck in the Freddy Vs Jason loop for awhile with a villain of the week thrown in to mix it up.

Double weirdly, for me at least, this movie isn't part of the monsterverse bullshit like I just kinda assumed it was. It is an official Toho release so you know it's better than the dangling CGI keys of the American movies because you have to read it.

And if the Godzilla Minus One had a "message", it is likely something milquetoast like "wars bad".

When I first scanned this I thought they were talking the franchise as a whole but no, they mean this new American crap. Drawnder, the Puerto Rican who had to totally keep his friend alive for months with a car battery because of Trump, at least believes so. I couldn't tell you the message of any of the new shit or even if there was one, I could barely tell you themes they touched on, and Skull Island was not about shit. Was it about war is bad and war hawks don't want piece? No! That is one thing that fucking happens towards half way through the movie. Everything else about it is just loud and dumb. There is no "message" in any of the new movies. TBF that's me picking on Drawnder because he's the car battery tard.

For Bob and everyone else I would ask what is the message of any of the other movies? I would argue that there isn't a message through most of them, including the first one. Godzilla isn't about telling everyone that nukes are bad. Godzilla is the Japanese barometer on how they feel about nukes and nuclear power. The very first one is a direct trauma response to being bombed twice AND the Castle Bravo catastrophe. Without fucking eggheads fucking up their nuclear test in such a monstrous way we wouldn't have an entire 2 generations of people who get a kick out of a guy in a rubber suit destroying HO scale cities. You can see the opinion of the Japanese people shift on nuclear anything over the years in the movies. Godzilla will go from destroyer to a power that's neither good or bad that fights off greater threats to world protector that does a silly little dance and has a cute little son to destroyer again depending on what's going on in the real world. Hell, Shin Godzilla was a reaction to the Fukushima reactor and the government response to it after the tsunami in 2011. This new one I have no idea what it's about but given that I keep seeing "war torn Japan" thrown around I'm guessing a retconning of Gojira with flashy new CGI so you can really see that mother's useless attempt to shield her child from nuclear hellfire. Oh joy...another thing telling me that wanton death and destruction sucks when you're on the receiving end of it.

Perhaps I'm being too pedantic in my belief that themes are not messages but to me saying these movies have messages is like saying the message of John Carpenter's The Thing is that when you can't trust anyone the best bet is to kill everyone and then yourself.
