As the saying goes, life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards. So let's do some testing (I used this website if you want to follow along. Dividends are reinvested.)

The article mentions six companies: Anheuser-Busch, Disney, Dick's, Nike, Target, and Apple. So let's make a sample portfolio with $10,000 invested more-or-less evenly across all six. Since anybody can buy the dip, let's see what happens if we started 2023 holding all six:

So if we started the year with $10,000 spread evenly across all six, we'd come away with $11,339. As a graph, that looks like this:

We had a 13.39% gain. Pretty cool.

But now let's compare that gain to two things: the first, Vanguard's S&P 500 index fund (VOO); the second, if we chose to hide the money in our mattress for 5 years (assuming we had no major expenses and no niggers stole it from us).

Portfolio 1 is the original six stock portfolio. Portfolio 2 is the index fund. Portfolio 3 is plain cash.

In graph form, it looks like this:


From an investing standpoint, keeping your money in cash is usually a bad idea. But our six-stock portfolio actually underperformed cash for October and November. Meanwhile, the index fund went laughing all the way to the bank, getting double the growth of the original portfolio and 5x the growth of plain ol' cash.

Now, there's a good reason for this: the index fund tracks 500 companies instead of 6, so it's less vulnerable to market volatility and consumer revolts. And obviously (as Rolling Stone points out), if you chose to buy in October, you'd beat the index (and have a hefty capital gains tax if you sold them):


Of course, Rolling Stone doesn't ask the obvious questions: where is the low point? Where is the high point? How do you know when you've hit the bottom? Are large, politically motivated groups like Blackrock putting their thumbs on the scale?

My point is this: Rolling Stone has no clue what they're talking about, and anyone who takes them seriously is no smarter than Robert.

Simply put, shorting means you borrow shares from a broker and sell them for money. Then, at a later date, you buy those shares back and return them to the broker. If you're lucky, the shares will have gone down in price.

As an example, let's say we decide to short Kiwi Farms, LLC (ticker: SNEED). SNEED is currently going for $100/share, so we borrow 100 shares, promise to return them in a year, and sell them. We make $10,000. One year later, SNEED has gone down to $50/share for whatever reason. Our broker calls us up and asks for their shares back. We buy the shares back at $50/share, spending $5,000, and return the shares. This means we made $5,000 profit.

Disney sold for ~$180/share at the opening of 2021, and now sell for ~$90/share, so yes, anyone shorting Disney for at least a year would've made money.

(If this explanation sounds familiar, back in 2021 the Melvin Capital hedge fund was shorting GameStop stock. /rWallStreetBets bought so many shares the fund had to default on its debt. You probably remember that.)

The opposite of this is taking a long position: the classic buy-low-sell-high strategy, and the one Rolling Stone is advocating.

I.E. - He understands that a company that has $6.70 in labor and material costs to produce an item can't sell it at $5, or it will eventually go out of business. Disney has to increase the costs of tickets to WDW? Sure, makes perfect sense, fewer people are visiting, so it only makes sense that to make the same revenue the price of admission has to increase. I think I can understand why the professor in the anecdote thought Fleischer Capeshit was garbage. While it was beautifully animated, it was also noticeably rotoscoped in places. Some people really, REALLY, REALLY fucking hate Rotoscoping. Some animators look upon it as "cheating" since it's literally tracing over live action footage of a person. There were things they couldn't rotoscope by definition (such as Superman flying or lifting very heavy things) so they were animated "roughly"- often by inexperienced animators - and this contrast could make the normally fluid animation look jarring. Having said this, I think it would be a mistake for any instructor in visual arts, particularly in the field of animation, to NOT cover that, regardless of their personal opinions on the subject. After all, this was considered the highest quality animation in the fucking 1940s. The professor is a retard and has no business teaching history of ANYTHING, let alone animation, if he chooses to ignore a pivotal moment in the history of animation.

That was a favorite refrain of the Bob analogue I used to be friends with - that any time the cost of ANYTHING went up? It was corporate greed because a company can always just withdraw some money from the bank to cover things like rising raw material costs or hikes in the minimum wage. If they REALLY wanted to , McDonalds could sell Big Macs for five cents and pay everyone $50 an hour! They only sell them for $4 and pay minimum wage because they're greedy! He just KNEW it.

Point out that at $7 a gallon for diesel in the late 2010's that the trucks brining the frozen patties are gonna cost more to run than they used to? And that extra cost has to go somewhere? You'd get a scowl and a declaration that you were "making excuses".
