The real reason Unfrosted failed is because it is the latest in a long line of fad films covering a behind the scenes look into the creation of a product or some sort of consumer-corporate product feud. There has literally been so many of these over the last few years. We had both the stupid Cheetos and Air Jordan movie last year. We had Ford v Ferrari back in 2019. Actually, there is a strong if niche audience for this stuff - its just that they already get it, for free and in better quality, on youtube from channels like Company Man and the like there's a lot of successful content over there doing 30-60m dives into the history of a product, a franchise, or a brand. I don't know who got it in their head that this relatively small niche would become mass market if you just expanded the production values by many orders of magnitude, but they clearly took the consoomer meme a bit too literally.

"Politics" is an extremely slippery word with hundreds of shades of meanings; whether escapism is "political" or not depends on what shade of the word you have in mind, so I won't touch it here. Many artists (especially college-affiliated types, such as the composer Milton Babbitt) don't give a fuck if anyone gets anything from their works. That is Shou Tucker. He is a fraud. He is infamous in the Fullmetal Alchemist anime (and Manga I suppose) for fusing his daughter and his dog into a chimera using alchemic transmutation. The thing was, the creature (who could kinda talk) that resulted was in constant pain and was put out of its misery by Scar. Shou had already done something similar with his wife. He is probably the most hated character in Fullmetal Alchemist, and maybe even in the top 10 of most hated Anime characters in general.

Gave this a watch because I was interested to see how he was going to spin this concept being a flop, not even reaching the numbers of his average movie review, and spin he does. He pretends this was a great success, that he got a lot of great feedback, and that he was going to do another animated movie but because Filmation were mean and targeted him specifically (There is no automated takedown system, that is a myth of the far right) but that got demonetized and could you please donate to him.
