James Cameron made Ferngully but worse. The original plans for Avatar actually looked like something that might have been interesting. The first movie was supposed to be a trilogy and the story would have progressed in a much more natural pace with a lot more world building and so on. But Cameron didn't get full confidence that he would get to make it so he made the whole movie a single thing. And that is just the start.

Why are the humans so retarded with how they are accessing the resources of Pandora? Why do they need to nuke the big ass tree? Aren't you gonna dig anyway? Ever heard of a diagonal mine-shaft dumbass? Why even bomb the blue fuckers with spears and arrows when you can literally just be inside a armored car and ignore them? Why is the mining even being done there if there are literal mountains of it on Pandora? Wouldn't those mountains have a lot more of it to be mined? Are you telling me the guys who didn't bat a eye at making the Trail of Tears look good for some reason felt squeamish about destroying mountains with no one there to cause possible problems?

Well, the whole thing about Cameron is that he makes lowest common denominator movies, but super polished and well done in terms of production and acting. Its pretty much his brand.

He may have written volumes about the lore and such for the Avatar movies, but none of that matter if he can't work it in the actual story that is been told in the screen, and when it comes down to it, Cameron defaults to the same archtypes and storytelling devices he always used during his career.

People joke about Avatar being Dancing with Wolves with smurfs, but to me I just thought Cameron was doing "The Abyss" again, with a cartoonish overly belligerent military man against scientists and aliens.

And even then people pointed out that "The Abyss" was a "tried and true" formulaic sci-fi tale that you have seen dime a dozen in Sci-fi magazines, but elevated by the production and special effects.

And speaking about Sci-fi magazines, its where Cameron got the concept for the Terminator movie from a Harlan Ellison short Story (or the TV episodes based on it). Cameron my get a lot of credit for inovating visuals and cinematography, but when it comes to story he is as basic as it can be.

So yeah... I like most of Cameron flicks, I gave the last Avatar movie a hard pass because I didn't care much for the first one, but aside from the two first Terminator movies, there isn't much to ponder about his filmography, they are just very well done time wasters, they entretain for sure, but no point in dwelling afterwards, and yes, that goes for Aliens and Titanic as well.
