I can't quite discard the notion that we are all more or less the product of luck and happenstance, hence me saying in my previous post that this is an uncomfortable realization.

You're right in so far as luck determines what those opportunities are. If you're really adamant about pursuing investment opportunities like my Nvidia example, its entirely luck if another opportunity like that ever arises - statistically, it will, but statistics are a bitch.

My point is more that opportunity that you luck upon is often measured in opportunities per week, shits fucking everywhere. It just often isn't the opportunity you "want", which is where discipline and seizing the chance tend to come in - Everyone in my office knows how short of hands the skilled trade workers are getting, and are stressing over the possibility of layoffs in the IT space. Despite that, none of them are chasing the obvious opportunities to shift early and get in while there's still people to learn from, because it's not what we "Want" to do.

We are ultimately the product of our decisions - Luck and Happenstance only determine what slate of decisions you can probably make, and "No" is always an option, and the most common one people do make. Bob is a great example, he's constantly bombarded with opportunities to change what he does, learn from others, or even just moderate his insane opinions a little bit. Instead, he choses no. When he gets lucky and stumbles across some bit of news early, he drags his feet making content about it and is way behind the curve by the time its relevant, refuses to use the opportunity correctly.

Its one of those annoying things to acknowledge at the end of the day, because its ultimately saying "Luck determines which mistakes you can make" which is about as far from absolving people of the circumstances of their life as they can get, and it feels really shit at first to come to terms with that. But its an important recognition to make. Luck and happenstance never forced a person to do anything, only gave him the option to do it.

It really doesn't matter how academic you are or if you come from a broken home or whatever else, if you don't have a hunger to self-improve and get success and something from life, you will fail and it will be miserable.

What really happened to Bob is he is a man of very limited intellect and ability who lucked into Internet fame because of the exact moment he was making videos online. Had he been born earlier, he'd have probably been forced into some other kind of career before he could have participated in the Internet media frontier. He basically already won the lottery through those fortunate circumstances, so I doubt he'd have that kind of luck with the real lottery.

It was also the worst thing to happen to him. Had he been born say ten years earlier he would have had nowhere to ramble online until he was 24 and he's shown multiple times he's a luddite, can't stand new tech. Wouldn't be surprised if he hasn't upgraded to a flatscreen yet and just thinks everyone who says they're just as good as the cinema is lying. He would have been too incompetent to work out how to join a forum where his ideas could be re-enforced. And he's too lazy to go out and make something on his own, so that movie career never would have happened even without the internet to distract him.

Had he been born ten years later, he would have tried to be a Let's Player or vlogger, maybe even gone to college for video production. He might actually be a more competent version of himself, one who actually understands how movies work because he actually took a video editing course. But he'd still be incompetent in his lazy execution and would just be one of a million hopefuls who never gained any traction.

In both scenarios, he'd never have the option to become a full time creative the way he is now. And he would have been better off for it.

I like to use alcoholism as an example. (plus keep it bob related)

Are people born alcoholic? No. Do people choose to be alcoholics? No. Is it pure luck? Only if you were born in a time and place which had no alcohol in it. Otherwise alcoholism is a result of a person making choices, one after another that led them to a point where they can longer choose at all.

I've seen plenty of stories out there. BY far the biggest "luck" for anybody is an intact home with two parents. But I've also seen people who didn't even have that, rise up to make something of their lives.

The world is full of good fortune and bad. I've seen people showered with every opportunity and blessing burn it all down and I've seen people handed nothing but a shit sundae turn it into fertilizer for a bumper crop. Ultimately life is the choices people make. Too many get obsessed about whether they are as rich or successful as Elon Musk or Steve Jobs. That's not what matter. What matters - what's "success" is whether you made do with what you could. Whether you took what life threw at you and made something out of it. Whether you did right by the people in your life. You do all that, and you're a success, I don't care whether you made a billion dollars or two cents and luck's got nothing to do with it.

And with all that? Yeah, Bob's a failure.

Bob used to get 200k views per video and this was pre adpocalypse, which made sponsorships necessary. Even if he was only getting $2cpm, that's $400 a video. If he'd had the discipline to stick to his Escapist output, that's 800 a week, plus his patreon giving him $3800 a month, he could have been making over six grand a month in theory, But it wasn't sustainable because he refused to just upload videos to his own platform and instead spent too much time chasing after other websites to give him a new job.
