For those unfamiliar with the name Pete Rose, he was a baseball personality who is considered one of the greatest men to ever play the game, holding records for base hits (4,256), total games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053), and singles (3,215) during a 24-year career (1973-1986) playing with the Cincinnati Reds, the Philadelphia Phillies, and Montreal Expos (pre-2004 before the team moved to DC); Rose was also a manager for the Reds from 1984 to 1989. (This information was found using a quick web search, as I don't commit baseball statistics to memory.)

However, Pete Rose also had a gambling problem, and frequently wagered on baseball games during his time as the Reds' manager. In August of 1989, MLB Commissioner A Bartlett Giamatti got wind of this information, directly banning Rose from the league--and all future Baseball Hall of Fame consideration--as a direct result of Rose's gambling addiction. I don't necessarily disagree with what you said here, but the issues surrounding Rose's gambling and his suspension are a lot more complex than just whether or not he did it. While he did admittedly do the gambling and we can debate on whether or not he was genuinely sincere about claiming responsibility, Rose has received a lot of support over the years because people feel the punishment was excessive, that it was more of a witch hunt against Rose and how MLB has actually handled his banning.

It would come out years later that MLB discovered that other people were found to be gambling at the same time, such as a group of umpires, and were not given anything close to the same level of punishment as Rose received. Rose's punishment was more because a lot of people in baseball hated him and wanted to see him suffer in some way. Removing him from the game and preventing him from being inducted into the Hall of Fame seemed to be the best way to do so. Take also into consideration that despite him being banned from the game, MLB has repeatedly allowed him to attend MLB events that sponsors wanted him at.

Ironically I am going to mention another left-wing psycho, but Keith Olbermann a decade ago when he was on ESPN did an excellent segment on the history of Rose being banned and why he felt Rose should be reinstated. On top of some of the things I mentioned above, Olbermann mentioned how gambling isn't seen as destabilizing as it once was given what occurred during the steroid era. One of the things I want to point out is that Olbermann predicted MLB would allow Rose to appear at the 2015 All Star game despite him being banned, and that is exactly what happened.

I am not trying to defend Rose because he genuinely was a douchebag in a lot of ways. But the issue about his ban is far more complex than just whether or not he actually gambled.

The real problem with all this is that Bob might not actually being so "no" to Pete Rose because of the gambling issues. The real reason a lot of people have been angry about the Pete Rose decision is that he by his own admission committed statutory rape and may have been more involved with underage girls than just that incident. The person that led that investigation into his gambling, an attorney by the name of John M. Dowd who was actually involved in the first Trump administration believe it or not, claimed to have found a lot more evidence of Rose sleeping with underage chicks outside of the case I mentioned above.

While not related to his banning of course, it has caused him to lose a lot of sympathy he had.
