In case there are some too young to remember this there used to be a Yellow Pages Phone Book and that was for Business phone numbers and a White Pages which was the directory for citizens phone numbers. Back in the day when I was growing up my family would pay the small the fee to the phone company because back then you only had one phone company yeah, all phone companies until 82 were owned by Old Ma Bell AKA AT&T in the U.S. and with that small fee our number was unlisted and thus not in the book. If you wanted to find an address you had to hope they owned property and check county or city records which meant going in person to look at the records. Finding people was hard you could easily disappear but that all changed with the internet.
