I think what makes his Mario outfit especially stupid is that Bob wants people to take his political manifestos and rantings about pop culture seriously but he doesn't realize it's almost impossible to take him seriously when someone sees that picture of him dressed as Mario.

If you looked at that costume without knowing who Bob is and then found his Twitter it would almost seem like some sort of joke. Surely nobody who willingly and unironically dresses like that would be that much of a self-righteous prick in real life, right? But nope, it's not a joke and he really does lack that much self-awareness to realize it makes him look stupid and it takes away what little credibility he has.

I don't think he understands how ridiculous it is to see a grown man dressed like that in a solo photo, if he were dressed like that in a party situation or something and there were other people in the photo with him it would be acceptable, shit there wouldn't have to be other people just signs of a party like some booze or decorations or anything like that.
Even assuming he wasn't at/going to a party and was going trick or treating with any young cousins or nieces/nephews as part of a family outing you don't get someone to take a photo of you, the ADULT, dressed as a character from video games aimed towards children.

I think the photo really supports what people have been saying about how he's stuck in school, even the way he's posed is like something a kid would do when their mum takes a photo of them dressed as a super hero or something.

A good marker of maturity is the ability to laugh at yourself. One of the strongest arguments demonstrating the Bob is a severe case of arrested development is that he seems to lack that ability completely. He takes himself so seriously it becomes funny (when it isn't infuriating). I mean, really, how hard would it be by now to just say, "Yup, I look like a complete dork in that photo. I still love Mario. WORTH IT! Anything else to say?" That'd take a lot of the wind out of the point-and-laugh people do over that image. But nope -- yet again he launches into a furious explanation of why he was wearing it, for what purpose, etc.

I guess being a humorless prick is just the price of the Superior Future.

Hell, if he was posed it would look better. I think what caps the ridiculousness of the photo is the stance; that lumpy, slack-limbed stance and that dead-eyed neutral stare that appears to be trying to physically molest the viewer through the viewing screen. If there was the slightest indication that he wasn't taking himself seriously, then it'd be less worthy of condemnation. But no, there isn't.
