Bob had, apparently, a specific wish to be buried a specific object (help, I can't remember nor look it up, phone post here) and Barb decided to cremate him instead. If somebody needs to correct me, feel free. It seems to me she couldn't even honor him in death.

It is worth noting that Bob left them quite a lot of money, it was only when they pissed it all away on Chris' legal misadventures that they wound up poor. And while Chris and Barb are both dreadful representatives of our species, I don't honestly think they held Bob in so little esteem that they'd just go for the cheap option.

I suppose they could have spent a lot more money and buried him in a grave with a massive, ornate, carved headstone. But they chose a perfectly nice, clean, respectable resting place for him.

Bob left them some money, but they weren't exactly able to live a life of luxury on it, even if they hadn't been stupid about it. So they chose a decent but affordable resting place.

Suppose you had a friend without a lot of money whose parent died and left him a modest sum. Would you feel he had done something awful if he buried him in a mausoleum? I really doubt many people would answer yes. And if you do, there are mausoleums all over the place full of people's whose family members you should be outraged at.

Don't hold Barb and Chris to a ridiculously high standard. Hold them to a normal standard, and they will fall short in many ways. But not in the way they honoured Bob.

Do we have any evidence that this was an actual, sincere desire of Bob's, or are we going off of that one random crappy story from the Catie date? Concluding from one of Chris's weird Bob anecdotes that this was Bob's most heartfelt dying wish and Barb was spitting in his face!! seems like jumping to conclusions, at the very least.

Honestly? It sounds like just kind the kind of thing Barb would do.

I know that what I'm about to say is going to rankle some people, but please bear with me.... Sometimes I wonder about the nature of Chris missing Bob. Does he genuinely miss him, or does he miss Bob taking on the roles that Chris is now responsible for since his death (bills, being Barb's errand boy. etc.)? Maybe it's a combination of the two.

Yeah, I know this sounds cold and awful, but prior to Bob's death there was very little indication that Chris felt anything for him (please correct me if I'm off-base here). Based on some of the "Classic Chris" videos and emails, it can be intuited that Chris had a rather contentious relationship with Bob. The old Christmas video was very telling as well, with Chris and Barb sitting across from Bob (Chris's arm around Barb's shoulder). The body language in that video spoke volumes.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting things because I'm not making allowances for Chris being autistic - I don't know.

Anyway, just throwing this out there. I'm interested in hearing other people's thoughts on this.

After re-reading my post (above) the following occurred to me.

Bob was always the authority figure in Chris's life: he made him do things he didn't like/didn't want to do.
  • Bob tried to rein in Chris's spending and teach him to be more financially responsible.
  • Bob prodded Chris to get a job (before ultimately giving up, probably right after Chris got fired from Wendy's)
  • Bob had Chris doing [gasp!] physical labor (pulling weeds, cutting the grass....)
Barb, being the psycho manipulative bitch that she is, was probably only too glad to have Bob assume the role of authoritarian/disciplinarian in Chris's life, leaving her free to enjoy the role of coddler and chief enabler. To put it simply, Barb wanted to ensure that she was the parent Chris loved best, and, by all accounts, she was successful.

This is just my own personal theory, but it makes sense to me and provides a reasonable explanation of the Chandlers decidedly odd family dynamic.

Edit:
@Lurkingjay made pretty much the same point. I hadn't yet read his post when I posted this.

Bob, despite all of his failings, really did his best to try to provide for his family, and I respect him for that.

I don't know what happened with his two other kids, or how he was as a person / family man prior to marrying Barb, but he certainly did right by her and Chris.

If Chris and Barb had simply accepted the plea deal at the beginning of the Michael Snyder legal troubles, they'd still have a nice little nest egg in the bank (unless, of course, Barb burned through it buying more useless Goodwill shit).

I didn't see anything wrong with Bob's internment, it seemed perfectly appropriate. ( I honestly don't think Bob would have wanted anything too elaborate/fancy.)

It could have been worse. At least they didn't put his ashes into an old cookie tin (which would have inevitably ended up being lost somewhere amongst the detritus of the ever growing hoard).

Let's face it, the only way that veteran medal is going on this tomb is if some potential sweetheart from the ground up, who is most obviously not a troll at all, contacts OPL and relates her struggles getting the exact same thing on her dearly departed fathers resting place as well to recognize his service in bombing Hiroshima for the US to wrap up the Korean War with a lot less insults and such being flung around and then suggests Chris do the same for his father.

The idea that Chris didn't really love his father is borderline :alog: territory to me unless somebody has some better evidence than the lazy fat-ass crying about a rare instance of parenting being exhibited during the years between 1982 and 2000 by the guy. At least come up with a picture of Lego-afterlife-Bob in the shake chamber with the bitch, the witch and the bastard first people before stooping to that insinuation, please.

Not all vets want to be burried with miltary honors. Not having as much backround research into Bob as some, I just wanted to throw that idea there.

I know that very personally as a family member of mine who was quite famous wanted to be burried in his home town over arlington as well as no honors on his tomb. He did allow a ceremony and my father has the flag. But that was all per his requests.

I think it's great that even though Bob brought some amusement and made errors this site can see he did the best he could and is willing to try to honor him.

I'm not against him being honored at all, I just wanted to chime in a very personal and close to home issue that maybe Bob wanted not to have them.

This is pretty depressing.

I was kinda hoping that Bob would escape Barb in death, but it looks like he only got a temporary reprieve. Dammit. :heart-empty:

Call me ill-informed and off topic, but I don't see why Bob is treated as this paragon of parenting while Barb is treated like the worst parent ever? To me they seem pretty equally incapable haha

Bob left them $50K in life insurance, which was flushed away quick to pay for legal fees, court costs, and Snyder's medical bills. All because Chris is stupid and refuses to take "no" for an answer.

Bob at least had the parenting skills to impose some restrictions on the wild beast. When Chris stole credit cards and went on spending sprees, Bob literally saved him from charges of credit card fraud and simply demanded Chris turn over his Tugboat and be be given a small allowance in the form of prepaid debit cards until the debt was paid off (which said debt was wiped clean when Bob expired). Bob jumped on a proverbial grenade for Chris. WTF did Barb ever do?

Did he really steal credit cards? I thought he got them without telling his parents and then abused the shit out of them until angry "pay your debt" letters flushed the mailbox or something...

Barb neither stopped her precious son before the Game Place incident nor the Gamestop Incident last year...
Let that sink in: Both times Chris had severe run ins with the law, Barb was present. And it still happened.

Those cards belonged to his parents. Chris took them without permission and ran them up. That's still theft and credit card fraud. I'm sure the only reason why Bob didn't throw him to the wolves for that stunt was because of the Autism Card and Barb's refusal to press charges.

I would even say Barb actually encouraged both times. She was supposedly behind the wheel as well as knowingly entering a mall Chris was banned from and letting him wander alone. People don't mean to say Bob is a good parent, Barb is just worse to the point that Bob is way less bad even at his worst.

Bob actually tried to teach Chris things and spent time with him (i.e. teaching him things in the wood shop). Barb on the other hand only seemed to coddle and praise Chris.

True, but Bob was dead by the time those things happened.

Oh god, that wood shop. It's like you could see Bob had some aspirations for Chris... some father/son bonding by doing some crafts or something. And it just didn't pan out. It's really depressing.

True, but Bob was dead by the time those things happened.
That's true, we don't know if Bob would have acted smarter... but I have a certain feeling he wouldn't have chosen the dumbest option available to check out if Snyder is gone.
Bottom line: what happened really doesn't say anything about Bob's quality of parenting, but we do know Barb is pretty much useless in keeping her misbehaving menace of a son in line.

Still seems like Bob was covering his own ass and not necessarily parenting well. Did Barb work while she was rai

It sounds like he was covering his own ass rather than really being a good parent. Barb probably did the majority of parenting since as far as I know she was a stay at home mom. Not that she did a great job obviously, but Bob probably wasn't even very involved. Barb most likely dealt with Chris way more often than he did. Not that that pardons her recent dementia concerning him and his insane and criminal actions against others.

Just still don't get the I love Bob and hate Barb bandwagon!

Lol usually when people in their 20s steal their parents credit cards its to buy stuff to sell for meth.... I'm not even sure if that's worse than the eye of judgement cards or butt plugs chris probably spent them on.

By the time the serious damage to Chris' upbringing happened, Chris was out of school and Bob was home during the day as well.

You shouldn't consider Barb as a parent, so much as a second Chris. That's the kind of thinking that all the Barb hate comes from. She's like a Chris, but with way worse intentions and more maliciousness than Chris himself.

Heh, not even that. Barb's foot was literally on the gas and her hand on the wheel when she hit Snyder and drove off. She's also assaulted cops before.

Like I said before, it's not top-of-the-line, but it's ridiculous to judge people's love for their family members based on how much money they dump into the bottomless pit of funeral expenses -- and a lot of people choose options designed to lessen funeral expenses for their surviving loved ones. Who's to say Bob didn't?

This is a very good point, and one I think many people might overlook without some sort of personal context. If every funeral you've attended is to a certain 'standard', then a less expensive service could certainly be seen as cold-hearted and throwaway. My grandmother wanted to minimize expenses for her own service and as a result was buried in the crematory's free box. It certainly felt bizarre, but it was her wish.

Minor tangent here, but that event helped me to re-evaluate the absurd ways which I viewed death. It forced me to question why I felt so strongly for the 'living conditions' of the dead, but also why I felt my own desires should trump another's final wishes.
