Imagine if anytime a BIPOC person went missing, there was this much media attention… This is coming from a skinny white girl with blonde hair and blue eyes who could easily pass for Gabby Petito’s sister : the lives of people who look like us are not more important nor worthy of media attention than anyone else’s.
What happened to Gabby is tragic and law enforcement is clearly giving it priority concern, but where were the 24/7 live feed of the house of a person of interest and the thousands of people watching nothing happen on said feed when any of the AT LEAST 41 children in Detroit alone were declared missing since the beginning of 2021?? If a small fraction of the attention that was given to Gabby’s case was shared with the combined 41 reports, that would have made a great difference in the potential recovery of those kids. And they matter just as much as she does.
This is in no way a judgment about Gabby Petito nor her family… she deserves justice and is not responsible for the media coverage her case received as opposed to any other missing person. She is not guilty of being a young white female victim, that just happens to be her physical appearance. But this obsessive following by the general public and media is clearly a case of Missing White Female Syndrome more than it is a sign of genuine concern about a human life being cut short. If it was, there would be this much attention and baseless theories over a plethora of Reddit threads each and every time a person is declared missing, which by the way happens every single day in the USA.
If any of you wants to focus their attention on any of the 41 children from Detroit who have disappeared since January first if this year, this is a link. They deserve justice.
