What books would you recommend for those interested in strange characters of the sort that populate this message board? It need not be more than tangentially related.

I would strongly recommend J. Michael Bailey's, "The Man Who Would be Queen" describing the two types of male transsexuals. It is not written in an academic style, and it is very fun to read. One of the characters would have made for a perfect lolcow here, a man who had to quit employment due to its incompatibility with his masturbation schedule.

Another fun-to-read recommendation would be Jon Ronson's, "The Psychopath Test". It talks about sociopathy/psychopathy and has a little mystery entwined in it (to summarise badly, whether a prisoner in a psych ward who claims to be cured etc is faking it). It also goes into some detail for treatments for psychopathy developed during the hippy era, including tying together two serial rapists and murders while getting them high on LSD. Or the poop room in the bottom of a hospital, where one patient was entitled to paint the walls with poop to her heart's content.

Any recommendations would be appreciated: I like to read about the weirder side of human nature.

When reading your OP, two books jumped to mind, both by the same author. The Wild Boys as well as Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs. His writing style certainly isn't for everyone, and can be fairly difficult to follow. Both works are very surreal and can be very deviant at times. I've read either a bunch of times, and with each new reading I'm able to take something new away. Hope this helps.

"Image of the Beast", and "Blown" by Phillip Jose Farmer.

You will not forget these books in a hurry, believe me.

It's October, and I'm into Necromancy!

Anybody read Glinner's book yet, Tough Crowd? I'll get it either way, but would love to see some opinions from the farm.
