Fellow boomer haters on this thread, what do you make of this advice written by boomer Charles J. Sykes?
- RULE 1......Life is not fair, get used to it.
Coming out the gate with a dismissive broad-stroke accusatory statement. It's emotionally immature and psychotic to dismiss someone voicing their frustrations on unfairness and unjust things with an out-of-hand dismissal instead of empathy and understanding. Furthermore, get used to it is bullshit. And it's not even something boomers believe. Look at the anti-vietnam protests, Boomers didn't "get used" to college students getting deferrals from the draft (the eponymous 'fortunate son').
So, rule 1 is typical narcissistic boomer "DON'T TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS, I DON'T CARE".
- RULE 2......The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.
Psychotic narcissistic grandiosity that is making the claim that if you don't "accomplish" something (undoubtedly materialistic in nature), you should feel bad and have no self-esteem. Psychotic. Self-esteem should be an intrinsic baseline you can fall back on even if you stumble. Also, phrasing it as "The world" is strange and retarded. "The world" is not a monoculture and neither are people. What some would view as an accomplishment, others would think nothing of it or even think negatively of it. Very narrow minded.
- RULE 3......You will NOT make 40 thousand dollars a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice president with a car phone, until you earn both.
Sounds like a narcissistic parent who has done nothing to prepare their child for success, and is toying with their flaccid cock at the thought of kicking their child at 18 with no support so they can revel in their superior station in life to their own child, if I try to read behind the lines.
Also, it's another untruth. The child of a Wall Street trader or a doctor or lawyer will absolutely walz into a summer job where they clear major bank. Same for children of parents who own successful businesses. I guess if I take this line as a direct statement from the author to me, his theoretical child, I guess it's true, but it's not a universal rule at all.
- RULE 4......If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. He doesn't have tenure.
More boomer lies and grandiosity, coupled with "DON'T TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS" + "OH, YOU THINK YOU HAVE IT BAD?!"
Teachers are worse than bosses, as someone who has dealt with shit & good ones of both. Teachers can be tyrants that are just arbitrarily cruel to you, to degrees a boss can't and would never be due to the risk of a lawsuit and the fact that they're paying you even if he's being a raging cunt. If a teacher is doing an absolute shit job and is abusing you, you can't even fall back on "well, still got paid".
- RULE 5......Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping; they called it opportunity.
My grandparents didn't flip burgers. They learned trades and started their own business. A "flipping burgers" job is something that should only be done out of necessity because it can't be built upon, gives you no meaningful connections or skills, all for a minimal subsistence paycheck at best.
Parents that love you and aren't narcissistic monsters will usually advise against trying to balance a shit-job while pursuing higher education if they think it'll detract from your studies and efforts towards an actual career.
But this all ties into the "YOU'RE OUT OF HERE AT 18 AND YOU AIN'T GETTING A DIME!" blowhardedness that permeates this whole thing, so this is just them absolving themselves of wrongdoing by claiming that making you have to work shit-tier jobs out of necessity is actually a good thing.
- RULE 6......If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.
Comical. It is the parents fault. Maybe not intentionally, but it's the parent's job to teach you how to behave, how to cope, how to act, how to be a complete person. To prepare you for life. It's a common cry of narcissistic fuck-up parents to claim it was all the shitty kids fault, not them!
What kind of psychotic parent is more concerned with absolving blame on themselves than actually addressing the issues of the child?
It's narc reactivity. To acknowledge the shortcomings of your parents, or the abuses you may have suffered in childhood isn't "whining", you self-righteous faggot. To unfuck yourself you have to figure out what went wrong and what's missing. And to do so, you need to inventory all the fucked up abuses and let-downs you experienced as an innocent child who literally had no agency over the situations you found yourself in.
Typical Narc-y boomer parent "DON'T YOU BLAME THIS ON ME, IT WAS YOUR FAULT YOU WERE A SHITTY KID!"
- RULE 7......Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you are. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents' generation, try "delousing" the closet in your own room.
Lmao comically narc-y boomer wanting to be acknowledged as "cool", and feeling threatened by the kids "WELL YOU'RE NOT SO FUCKING COOL YOU STUPID KID!!! YOUR CLOSET IS DISGUSTING!!!"
Boomers that want the younger generation to acknowledge them as "cool" is comically narcissistic and delusional.
Also the statement is untrue. People that are intelligent and curious and interesting don't get lobotomized when they have children. This whole statement just feels like the author was trying to hold forth on some shit he thought was "cool", and he didn't get the praise and acknowledgement he craved, while making no efforts to engage with the younger generation on the shit they find interesting.
- RULE 8......Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life has not. In some schools they have abolished failing grades; they'll give you as many times as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.
More boomer narcissism. Claiming there is an objective "winners" and "losers" scale in life. Is a monk who lives a quiet life at peace with his god, doing small but meaningful work in a monastery a "loser" and a stock broker who does cocaine daily and is cheating on his wife and barely sees his kids a winner? Or is it the reverse? What social, emotional, material, or spiritual tokens do you use to define a "winner" or a "loser"? Because whatever he says, it's not a universal rule and will differ by culture and by person.
Also, no school did away with "winners" and "losers". They gave token symbols of accomplishment to kids who had the wherewithal to show up and try, instead of not even showing up, regardless of the outcome. You know what that builds? Grit. And Grit is actually what determines success. The people that succeed at their pursuits are the ones who keep showing up and don't quit, no matter who many times they fail.
His stupid fucking paragraph argues against grit, basically, because to the narcissistic boomer, it's better to not show up and compete if you're not going to win. Better to not try at all.
- RULE 9......Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you find yourself. Do that on your own time.
Lmao yet more talking down to a child. Sorry, faggot, lots of jobs are seasonal or shift-like in nature. Yet again this is more Boomer coding for "YOU'RE OUT OF HERE AT 18 AND I'M NOT PAYING ANY OF YOUR BILLS!!!!"
Life is very much divided into semesters. In any job there are times you can slack, times you need to crunch. Even in your seasons of life there are times when it's busy and times when you have the energy to pursue interests or objectives.
- RULE 10.....Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.
Lol random boomer rant against the show "Friends", seemingly. Just enraged that people on TV don't look miserable like HIM because HE has to GO TO WORK and HIS BOSS DOESN'T HAVE TENURE!
Typical Boomer narc grandiosity where he's belittling the intelligence of the reader by making statements on beliefs that you very well might not have but phrased like you automatically do.
Also, lack of theory of mind by expressing anger that TV isn't just an accurate depiction of his own shit-life he hates, because to him everything is centered and focused on him and him alone.
- RULE 11.....Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.
This just harkens back to both Rule 7 and Rule 4. This guy is a fucking dork and his entire life is his job he hates where he's terrified of his boss and abuses his petty authority over his underlings and children whenever possible. This rule is both "be nice to the avatar of ME" and also a coded "I will be in a position of authority over you!!"
In summary, this whole list is basically just "I HATE MY LIFE, DON'T TELL ME YOUR PROBLEMS AND GET AWAY FROM ME AND LEAVE ME ALONE!!!!"
