"The G8, reformatted as G7 from 2014 due to the suspension of Russia's participation, was an inter-governmental political forum from 1997 until 2014, with the participation of some major industrialized countries in the world, that viewed themselves as democracies.
The forum originated with a 1975 summit hosted by France that brought together representatives of six governments: France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, thus leading to the name Group of Six or G6. So, in 1976, it became the G7 until 1997 when Russia joined and it became the G8. In 2014, Russia was kicked out and it has been the G7 for the last 4 years. Pretty 'coincidental'.

Often at the Group of X summit (used because as I said earlier it always changes) It would be G7+ how many other countries show up. This started in 1994 but not officially until 2003 (when the G8+5 was unofficially formed). 2005 the summit would officially be called the G8+5.
Many countries have similar summits and usually at the same time. The number doesn't matter, what matters is the countries involved.
