I actually doubt that. Bear in mind Brad is rather old and went through the school system in a different era, when Special Ed didn't mean "Aspergers or Dyslexia", it meant "Downs Syndrome or Cerebal Palsy". We know Brad struggled in school, but I doubt he was lagging enough to warrant intervention by the standards of the time. Which is a shame, because if he had a modern Special Ed class, Brad might have done better in his high school and college years and not slipped into the funk that eventually led to his schizophrenia.

You could be thrown into one because of learning disabilities, personality disorders and developmental disability (though Richard really hasn't shown an IQ lower than 70 despite him trying nearly daily so he wouldn't get in for that one). Richard could have also been given an IEP and be in normal classes too. That's always a better choice so the child doesn't get bullied by other students for being in a class full of speds when they may just have problems with learning slowly.
