In Jewish law, it is a sin to write the name of YHWH and then erase or destroy it. Most modern Jews have accepted the word God as a substitute for His name. Though there is no prohibition against writing or destroying the word God, some Jews use G_d or even G!d as a substitute out of respect for modern religious practices.
