It was a second wind more than anything. Tony was already the biggest name of the late 80's. Skating went through a huge slump in the mid-90's. Rollerblading filled the gap, came and went, and then THPS ushered in a new era.

Well, age for one thing, alcohol and drug use for another. Long-term alcohol use in particular is known to cause bone density issues. Add that on top of the brain damage/coordination problems, and it’s amazing all he broke was a wrist.
