I want to elaborate on this further if you don't mind. Self deprecation is also an acknowledgement of ones faults, and that's fine. Whats key to it though is this: has that person not only acknowledged their faults but also made an attempt to change it?

For most people that answer is a resounding yes- I'm sure that every one of us here has heard or even made a joke about being embarrassed at something they've done when they were younger and are now a far-cry from the person they were. Once again, this is totally kosher.
