That's definitely not been my experience. I've lived in Eastern Europe for years and commieblock neighborhoods have just as much variety in residents as any other neighborhood housing type. You'll have good districts and bad districts and places which are a mix of both. Depending on what era they were built, some have extremely good sound insulation and it would take a small explosion before you hear any of your neighbors while others are like a cheap motel where anything above lower-average conversation speech can be heard with relative clarity. Some areas can be quite affluent and gentrified while others look like they haven't changed since the Brezhnev era.

This was absolutely the case in Romania during Ceaucescu's systematization campaign (and in pockets of Siberia and Central Asia where they were trying to bring the millennia-old traditional nomadic lifestyles of the natives to an end - a policy which ultimately failed). Coincidentally, the Romanian commieblocks are among the lower quality examples of the construction method (outside of the grand constructions lining the main boulevards of Bucharest). In the Soviet Union on the other hand, the Stalinka and Khrushchevka were absolutely a step up compared to the utterly destitute, rotting wooden hovels sprawling across the Eurasian landscape and communalkas of Saint Petersburg which were essentially former palaces of the Imperial aristocracy subdivided with paper-thin walls and shared facilities. Many of them were lit with a single lightbulb. Aesthetically they often suck (the Stalinkas at least tried to follow basic classical design and have really good sound insulation- they're regarded as the 'nicest' of the commieblocks and it was a major status symbol to live in a Stalinka) but that being said they were effective in virtually eliminating homelessness across the Soviet Union and other states from the socialist bloc. Doesn't change the fact that socialism/communism sucks ass in almost every other aspect though.

Absolutely, as an American, before I first traveled to Eastern Europe I assumed that almost all commieblocks were shoddily built, crumbling pigeonholes on the verge of collapse but was pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of them are unbelievably resilient, secure and sturdy. The ones built across the former Yugoslavia are also extremely well constructed and impenetrable, and were easily repaired after the Yugoslav wars. Not going to deny that a great bulk of them are really ugly externally but the interiors have been modernizing quite a bit over the years and are more spacious and cozy than one would imagine (except the Khrushchevkas which are pretty snug). Also the Soviet ones are usually spaced reasonably apart so there's a ton of greenery everywhere (where the local biome permits, of course). It's nice seeing essentially a forest from the balcony. Their no-nonsense practicality is undeniable.

People in the comments have brought up the small sample sizes, which he has dismissed, even when Lynn's own book shows a table of all the studies and its corresponding numbers. One study done by Kirkegaard et al. has a sample size of 53, Levinson picked kids from yeshiva schools, and the others are bloated due to verbal IQ, a thing Jews are indeed superior in. I would have liked to have seen more data from Israel as well as the math/physics related scores, as that will tell you whether they are 'superior'.
