you mean in cinema, the reason they made that the arc of the film was because by that time in online discussion the "he's such a funny guy, he was clearly the victim" was as close to the normal opinion as "the white people (in starship troopers) are the bad guys!" or "grease was all a dream!" fortunately unlike Chucky, the franchise wasn't poisoned by millennials at that point so the boomers in charge made sure to mock that trope entirely.
