He still moves his left leg up and forward while standing up on the toes of his right foot. He had perfect enough traction for a slap, you don't lift your feet for traction, so it actually looks like a boiling with rage emotional outburst where his whole body popped at the release of the rage. That's why it looks so gay.

I think it's real. Will and Jada recently dished that she was cucking Will a few years ago, and you can tell it hated it. Dude was shedding tears like a bitch.
So while he was originally laughing at Chris' joke about Jada's baldness, once Will saw her roll her eyes, he White Knighted because he wants to prove to her that he's worthy enough to not go creeping around for other dicks to sit on.
As for Chris, remember that he's a guy who had made many jokes that have pissed people off, and when he saw Will walking towards him, was ready and braced for a punch. He took it and didn't retaliate because he knows he had the high ground and didn't want to cede it to Will.

According to the LAPD, Chris Rock declined to press charges against Will Smith. Pretty sure that means the slap wasn't staged at all.

That could be leveraged as evidence that it was, but Will getting red-eyed and Chris having no witty retorts to what happened in the first place is-- I believe-- solid evidence that it wasn't staged.
Either he was sicced on Chris by his wife, or he dished out on Chris what he wished he could dish out on Jada.
