No not really. Texas would be utterly fucked if it seceded. Not only would Texas have the same problems that Britain is going to have but they would have more.
Businesses would evacuate Texas so fast because they wouldnt be considered "American" businesses anymore. Many people who were on welfare wouldnt be getting it anymore and would leave the state. Same with Medicaid, Medicare and seniors. The solution to these issues is a conundrum. In order to keep the businesses they would have to give out tax breaks galore, but in order to keep people on welfare they would need to tax someone. First thing to get taxed would probably be the Oil Companies which would basically turn Texas into an oil economy like Alaska which would be subject to the whims of Saudi Arabia if and when it decides to dump a bunch of oil onto the market. Britain has none of these problems because they have their own welfare systems.
There even theres the issue if Texas even has the right to secede. After all thats what the Civil War was fought over and in order to come back they had to agree not to secede again.
Scalia even said Texas doesnt have a constitutional right to secede.
Both choices to remain or leave were bad ones. Hurt your economy or subject yourself to a broken EU. The EU is broken and needs to be fixed or reformed but either choice didnt spell the end for Britain. There is going to be an economic downturn in Brtain and possibly the EU and maybe a slight downturn globally but this isnt the end. As someone said in this thread the sun will still rise. Besides, I always felt that Great Britain was always a nominal member of the EU but not really full on with them. Part of that had to do with their location, being a bunch of islands and all but they never adopted the Euro. GB always kept the pound and I thought it was odd when all other European countries had accepted the Euro including France and Germany.
Generally speaking, Britain has always seen itself as not-really-European, but they are such an economic powerhouse that they could join the EU and extract concessions from them that lesser states wouldn't have been able to get. It wasn't really a problem for anybody until the 90s, when the EU decided that any country between it and Korea could have membership. What has happened since then is your universal problem of corporate oligarchs profiting off the movement of cheap labor into established markets, soaking the working and middle classes who both pay for and don't see any benefit from the economic policies.
That and Brussels has pretty much gone insane trying to federalize what was always a loose confederation of states without any real mandate to back it up. People dug too greedily and too deep, and they woke the Balrog of nationalism and independence.

If I were to hazard a guess: some perceive that UK leaving the EU will result in unchecked limits on immigration, hence the accusations of discrimination.
It will be a bit of a downturn for Britain in the short-term, but they will be MUCH better off several years down the road, if they manage themselves properly.
