Software Engineer is a protected title in Texas and Florida. You have to get licensed to be able to call yourself that.

I think that's marvelous and should be implemented in all states, especially Massachusetts and Mississippi, because if every bozo can call themselves Software Engineer it really makes real ones look like clowns.

Interesting. I didn't know about this. A quick look at the Texas exam topics https://engineers.texas.gov/downloads/ncees_PESoftware_2013.pdf suggests that it's a pretty broad and conceptual as opposed to deeply detailed and technical, but there is zero chance Wu could even approach it.

The term "Software Engineer" or "Software Engineering" tends to be very over used however the most generally accepted in the industry is centered around the overall process of building software. Programming and development are part of it, but so are things like technical project management, architecture, system design, requirements gathering, process management, defect management, risk assessment, integration. A programmer might know how to code something based on requirements, but a Software Engineer would be expected to understand run the process with the goal of estimating, designing, building, and delivering software on time and on budget. Again though, the terms programmer, software engineer, and developer have been used so interchangeably that they really have lost a lot of granular definition.

In this case, Wu is an abject failure on both counts. It's a stretch to call him a programmer based on the fact he struggled for days with a simple command line interface requiring a few parameters to upload his game. Any actual programing , including a high level scripting language like Unreal Script, is probably far outside his grasp. Secondly, based on the fact his PC port is 2 years late, barely runs, and has been a financial sinkhole proves he is not a master of the overall process of planning and executing a software project i.e. Software Engineering.

Where's the game, John

What an idiot. He seems to think that a mirror that reflects -- not, as noted above, refracts -- all light would be invisible. Perceptible is also not the right word. Visible is.

And pale skin isn't more reflective, it's more translucent.

Flynt/Wu's babbling on this topic is what you might hear from a bright four-year-old.
I'm pretty sure refraction is a topic that would at least get touched on in highschool science classes. I believe I remember learning about the fundamental meaning and workings of it in my physics classes and learned more about it while working in a lab and later on in further education.

But, to be fair to Wu, if you drop out of college after 10 years with NOTHING to show for it, it's probably a bit of a stretch to assume that you paid any attention in all the schools you went to before.

Wow. 997! Pretty sure we are going to hit the mark today.

How fitting that the we would hit the 1000 (effectively 2000) post mark on the same day that the "official" release date is publicly announced.

The link defines a software engineer thus:

But, a Software Engineer has the connotation of treating software development as a craft that he is constantly trying to improve. He’s not just slapping things together recklessly, he’s engineering what he builds. That’s not to say that the others are thought of as reckless, just that a Software Engineer has the connotation of not being reckless.

and thus

Coder/Developer/Programmer are generally interchangeable, but Software Engineer tends to imply knowledge of best practices for scaling an application, including how to build it, how to do CI, how to document things, etc. A Lead is just the primary Dev that is making decisions, and is often specific to a product. An Architect is a non-programming job that focuses on integrating multiple products. None of this is codified anywhere but it's what I've tended to see play out.

Both of those paragraphs describe nothing more than competent programming practices. Different companies award the title based on different criteria, but software engineer is usually nothing more than a job title for an advanced programmer. As far as I can determine, no university offers a degree in software engineering and it doesn't seem to be a recognized discipline separate from programming. As noted by other posters, Flynt/Wu has laid claim to this title simply because it includes the word engineer and it makes him sound like some kind of tech guru and is much more impressive than the truth -- flunked out of Ole Miss as a journalism major.

I don't know about Florida, but in Texas if you call yourself any kind of engineer, you'd better have a degree in the field, and in some cases you'd better have passed a state licensing test as well. Many years ago, the state's universities and the many engineers who work in high-tech industries got fed up with people without qualifications calling themselves engineers and persuaded the Legislature to limit the use of the word to those with academic and/or state board credentials.

If Flynt/Wu lived in the Lone Star State, all it would take is one complaint about his false claims to be a software engineer and he'd be receiving a cease-and-desist order from the government. Come on, Frank, move to Dallas.

What does Frank get out of the relationship? He looks like he should be buying cars for his favorite stripper, not... whatever this is.

Given his history of domestic abuse, he probably gets the satisfaction of beating the shit out of his partner, John, without the guilt or shame associated with being a wife-beater, and since he's a small Asian while John is a tall white male, he's both literally and figuratively "punching up."
