Add Heinlein to the list of authors he doesn't get: Women in "Red Planet" have no role other than housewives, the father in the book is only OK with his daughter getting her firearms license because he thinks everyone should have a gun, and one of the supporting characters goes off on anti-government rants at the slightest provocation. Despite this, John talks about Heinlein like he was a modern-day Shakespeare.
