As much as I think Frank is a silly man, it's real work. He's writing patents (which gets really technical, it's not merely submitting forms, you are, with the inventor's help, sort of reverse engineering it - distilling it down to what the actual invention is). He can prosecute (write, submit and argue with the examiners) patents without an atty...a regular (non-patenet) atty can't, but Frank can't do atty stuff
[basically it's a whole different deal. A patent atty is both a lawyer AND a patent agent]

Though if I want to make fun of Frank, I think he just liked MoFo (that's really what they call it) b/c the chair at the time was openly gay (he used to do these firm-wide updates were released as homo a mofo) -- hey it's the bay area what do yo expect

Yeah it's a powerhouse, but it's also huuugee,- probably a thousand or so attys (and that's just the attys) - they are selective, but it's also not like he is 1 of 8, or 80 guys at the top or anything...and that's just mofo there's K&L Gates (bill gates' dad's firm) , Perkins Coie, there's a bunch

On one hand, there is prestige working there, on the other hand, you can get sort of on rails and work the middle as a functionary ("of counsel" if he were an atty) which has some comfort to it that working at a boutique firm doesn't

Looks like it was his first place and for a long time- they typically work a lockstep advancement model (this many years to be senior associate, this many years to partner. - a lot of high performers will make a lateral move to bump the advancement) and since he's not an atty he hit a ceiling...and at 12 years he would have topped out...no partnership track for Frank

I really liked it when John tweeted that Frank was doing legal work for Rebellion Pac, something that, if true, could cost Frank his job and his career, which would almost certainly result in John getting kicked to the curb and living on the streets.

No, it's a totally different thing. If he fucks up, conceivably billions of dollars get lost. What he does isn't trivial.

For someone who spent ten years in college, John's knowledge of academia is truly pathetic. No one with a Ph.D. in microbiology from a first-rate university would ever lie about having a measley J.D. in order to enhance his status. But John's worldview is informed by cheesy movies and TV shows in which characters with multiple doctorates are a lazy cliche to show that someone is a real genius.

I think John is dumb enough to be impressed by "lawyer" as a title, when a doctorate in an actual STEM field is a lot more impressive. It's such a ridiculous and pathetic thing to lie about and shows he has the intellectual depth of a mud puddle. No wonder he couldn't even get a pathetic journalism degree after ten years of failure at his parents' expense.

John's obsessed with politics which is full of lawyers who are complete idiots so he thinks it's a prestigious thing. People like John can't conceive you can be really smart in one thing but absolutely stupid in another because they're so used to be in stupid in everything but smart in nothing while acting as if they're experts in everything.

Or that being a Senior Patent Agent at MoFo, one of the most prestigious IP firms in the world, is actually more impressive than just being a junior associate there, as many, many young lawyers have been.
