Brighter Shores - Point and Click MMORPG - Made by Andrew Gower (the creator of RuneScape)

I really like reusing the same monsters but scaling them up and letting you choose which version to fight. This takes advantage of the smaller map and allows locations to have more staying power.
This is the honeymoon period speaking. In the long run, that will suck.

The interplay of skills is nice. Fishing and foraging fuel cooking, cooking is good for money
Doing things purely for money that buys nothing but tools. I don't agree that the interplay is good. Cooking is completely worthless outside of selling, which is a strange and dull choice.

The graphics look very boring and generic.
If there is something about a game that immediately turns me off is the style or lack thereof in this case. It looks like my Sims playthrough with a mod. First quest is to kill some goblins, I tapped out. If I had to come up with the most generic MMO ever, I'd look like this one a lot.

Regarding the UI, I like the idea of the 4 "panels", 2 on the left and right, but they should let you customize what's on each "panel" or put something more useful on the bottom right. Currently I just keep it to emotes. It'd be nice if I could put the quests or skills down there and have all four being in use.
You can customise those

I regret not coughing up the six bucks on day 1 just because of the sake of setting a name, which is a ridiculous first reason for why a player should want to subscribe to an MMO. Just for curiosity I tried making a standard name that gave me a Kiwi#1, but now the unnumbered name is taken. But I went ahead and tried making a possible second character with the name and this is what she would've looked like. It's as cute as I could've possibly made a female in this game

EDIT: also lol when you get to this screen you're not allowed to go back to the character creator. Not a big deal since I can just set this character to delete but that's really dumb

I tried the name as well but was number #6. I picked up a unique username that I'm fine with.

I think the barber lets you access the character creator again.

I played a bit more and the game wants me to strangle the creator on every corner. Yesterday I was grinding fishing to 25 for quest. It's the most ridiculous fishing experience in mmorpg I have ever tried. You have to click constantly to fish. There's not a moment where you can afk a bit. In runescape you just click and wait. In final fantasy xiv you wait for fish to hook. In BS you click, click, click and then have a tiny moment to wait for fish to respawn. Awful. I have found out you can afk and logout train at 20. So I pushed through and leveled before bed. Guess what you have to unlock the afk method with retarded knowledge points which you start to get after 20. Fuck you Andrew. I didn't want let the game win so I grinded the knowledge point. It wasn't too long. The afk method is utter crap. In 9h I got around 12k xp. I didn't level even once. I am also pretty sure you lose money doing this since bait is 3s and you sell full create for 3s and a create is 10 bronze. What the fuck was he thinking? This shit is not fun.

Tools are too expensive. I was selling literally everything I caught and can't afford spear upgrade. I know money is pretty much useless but what the hell. I was missing like 60s.

I also noticed my name has #1 beside it when I swear it wasn't there before. Someone paypigged and stole my name. I am mad. This shit is RIGGED.

The quests are alright I guess. I even had to take off guard gear for npcs to talk to me. The only thing that keeps me going.

I made it through to the end of Chapter 2. I just have to grind out to level 60 in Hopesforest and level 153 total to unlock the mine. I still need more time to formulate all of my opinions on the game but I've come to a few more.

The game very obviously caters more to a casual audience but forsakes something that made Runescape such a compelling game to play: the social aspect of the game. I get Andrew wants players to  play his game but this point above is a bit painful:

Brighter Shores would benefit more from a little more inactivity and keeping players in one location at longer periods of time instead of forcing them to run from segment to segment to camp individual spawns. Why in a school of fish do you only catch one? Why gather only one flower from a trellis when you see multiple of them? Do all other apples truly dissappear when you pick just one?

I think gather points should allow you to gather 3 of an item and we should be given item stacking up to 3-5 per inventory slot for gatherables. It would give players more time to breathe and socialize.

Yea that's what I was thinking yesterday. Not even a breather to open chat. Not to mention most people are probably on private since its default. Odd choice.

Anyway Andrew explained some design choices in community post:

I actually laughed at that:
We have designed Brighter Shores to be enjoyable both for players who want to play the game many hours a day AND for people who might only be able to a play a few minutes a day. This means that, in the future, some players will be a much higher level than others!

The amount of grind to do some of the first quests is way too much. Early levels are too grindy and after level 20 its a crawl. In runescape you can do waterfall quest in first hour of gameplay and get amazing rewards which parachute you into higher combat level.
I think I am done for now with the game. I actually feel more stupid fishing in BS than training agility in runescape. I will check it out again in like a year or something.

It's an interesting read and I don't hate the design decisions. It's not without flaws though and can be improved.

At least consider playing just enough to unlock passive training for a skill or two and then just do that for a while. Maybe play actively enough to upgrade the station every now and then. It'll give you something to come back to should the game considerably improve. I recommend Alchemy and one of the gathering skills specifically because exp boosting potions are locked behind it.

Are other passive skills better than fishing?

I think the Hopeport skill is "Scavenging" and the Hopeforest skill is "Gatherer" but those are used to gather Alchemy ingredients. Those two as well. Just got to get to level 20 to unlock passive training.

Alchemy and combat are 100% free afk. Dunno why fishing has such an investment to do it. I think gathering has a minor investment.

BTW I read on the steam forums that everyone should rush to episode 2 and get carpentry to level 32 asap as it unlock banking spots in all episodes via strange stones. I know there's one of those stones by the ghouls in episode 1.

Sounds like a side quest that unlocks banking via strange stones. Players rushing through the chapters might miss it.

Oh, and on a whim, I decided to see if anyone had taken a specific name... the name simply isn't available:

:story: Andrew Gower absolutely has to know about Chris Chan. I wonder if he visits the Farms or maybe has even checked out this thread.

Nah. I bet they grabbed a giant word filter list from some consulting company. A lot less effort then plugging in every obscure thing or missing even more obscure stuff.
