UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

TPTB did not want her in charge and they forced her out.
The problem with Liz Truss was not Liz Truss, but Kwasi Kwarteng, the chancellor. He's the one that came up with the agenda that set off the banks (abolition of IR35, rolling back huge tranches of government spending, cutting taxes, and reducing the power of the state by reducing its financial control). Truss nodded along with it, but it's not clear she was actually comfortable with it all. The ultimate issue was that they tried to do too much at once. Truss was ejected because they couldn't find a way to eject Kwarteng. If she hadn't let him have his head, it's likely she would have lasted a few years rather than a few weeks.

Kwarteng is an interesting fellow. He fully acknowledges that he pushed too hard with the mini-budget, but he suspected he wasn't going to get another chance at it even from the start. If he'd got even a fraction of it passed, we'd be in a much better situation today.

It's fitting her legacy is to be a pub quiz question and nothing else.
I think that’s a bit unfair. She wasn’t a good PM, but she would have been a good cabinet member for much longer. She’s clearly stating that the Whitehall machine, which I think is what bongo here is referring to..
Yes. Have you watched any of the interview with her since the whole thing? Very interesting viewing.
… is in charge and that interview is good. She’s openly saying that you need to get rid of a lot of the Blair era stuff like the him a rights act and all that to get anything done. That’s something I’ve heard no other current politician state openly like that. I think she was naive, but she’s clearly of the opinion that you need to root out some very specific of bits of legislation and the civil service to get any real change done, and that’s an opinion I share. A few more holding that opinion and willing to act on it would do this country an awful lot of good.

The US is considering a review of its stance on the Falkland Islands as punishment for the UK not supporting the war on Iran. :story: :story: :story: :story: Fuck keir, fuck seppos. Interesting dilemma for Keir because he WANTS to give away the Falklands but will he ally himself with drumpf?? lmfao. lol even
The US can kindly mind it's own business. Whats the orange twat going to do? Take the islands off us? Like to see him fucking try. Fuck Kier and anyone in government who wants to hand the Islands over.

Something most people (myself included) kinda missed. There was a by-election in Barton and Winton in Salford on Wednesday which was won by Reform. This is a little surprising and kinda impressive since it was a formally fairly safe seat (1200 vote majority in a city with 75% Labour council). Given all the shitposting about Reform candidates over the last few days can't help but chuckle at this line from the MEN story though:
Mr Felse has previous connections to Greater Manchester and was parade queen at Manchester Pride in 2011.

There was another by-election in Cornwall as well.
Reform UK: 30.2% (-7.7) - 645
Greens: 24.8% (New) - 529
Independent: 16.9% (New) - 361
Lib Dems: 16.3% (-9.9) - 349
Conservatives: 6.2% (-14.6) - 132
Labour: 5.6% (-9.4) - 130
A 30% turnout with only one spoiled ballot. I hear Plaid and Reform are neck and neck in the Welsh polls as well. The Salford Reform vote surprises me, but they are probably still reeling from the Synagogue attacks and Polanski's recent dodging of the Islamic Question. It will be worth watching to see how the Jews vote

Yea the falklands shit isn't great and the reputation with america is kinda fucky. Do we have any more paedophiles we can send to them? Can we get old jimmy dug up to serve as a representative?

David Walliams, Philip Schofield?

Also the only other politician I’ve seen treated like truss by the media attack was Trump at that ball for obama/clinton where he was hazed and the spark ignited in him.

That's reminded me of an excellent song by Sabaton, called Shiroyama. It's about the battle of Shiroyama Hill, the last battle of the Satsuma Rebellion.

There's an interesting commentary about the battle, with someone who says "as the fifty remaining Samurai charged down the hill, to meet their end, they knew that while death was inevitable, surrender was not".

Don't fucking tempt him. What, precisely, could your own twat in charge do about it anyways if he chose to? Send a strongly written letter to D.C. with a c.c. to the UN and the Hague?

Ask Argentina what we would do.
I'll get right on that after you ask the Iranians what the USA can do. Would be funny as hell if Trump decides to blockade you guys. So funny everyone else you've done it to in the past might not care too much.

I mean yeah, you've still got the Chunnel, but good luck with that.

If your doing so well against Iran then you don't need our help, so why are you whining at us?

If you think you’re going to goad us into launching cruise missiles at all of your political leaders, it’s not going to work. Unfortunately…
