A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I have little to no sympathy for "mental health issues" in this context. I don't understand how someone with diminished responsibility can have the forethought to arm themself and then try to escape afterwards. Surely trying to escape = awareness of having done something wrong = culpable ?

So I don't think mental health issues are at all relevant in this situation and this is just terrorism, but I would say the Chris-Chan test is useful here.

I suspect Covid broke Dublin. I had a similar experience this time last year in London. I used to live in the city for 25 years and had come back down to visit an old friend. At the end of the evening, my friend got in a cab home, myself I was staying in a Premier Inn. This was a July Saturday night, around 10.30pm, balmy t-shirt weather. In the past this would be a recipe for everyone staying out all hours, a sort of continental atmosphere. I thought I'd walk back from the pub to the hotel, from Charing Cross (the Harp) all the way up to Kings Cross.
It was a really depressing, empty desolate walk, nobody about, some stragglers occupying basically empty pubs that would otherwise have been packed, spilling out on the street. Such a shame.

@Moomalade I had to do the same similar route actually and it was really sobering how much covid fucked cities, I am rarely ever in London and I am from a touristy place and it fucked us too. The difference in the states was crazy went to a Christmas light show and there were thousands there and it was really wholesome. Our high street though has no real staying power the amount of eateries in the city next to me is crazy its easily 80% coffee and eating places meanwhile places to buy wares from are dying. Charity shops are a genuine cancer too as they don't pay rates and rent is heavily reduced starving potential revenue.

The paki guy is retarded (no surprise, they are mostly arrogant cunts but stupid) They will happily attempt but the second it goes out their favour they spam the race card like a mother fucker. In the medical field they are the worst, the men are anyway. In fairness I work with a lot of Sikh women and they are pretty fiery but in private conversations they seem to angle at dating non-paki or non-sikhs because they say the men are very feminine. First law of travel you never fuck with airport security, they are a different breed and honestly they work hard, they have to deal with a lot of inane shit.

That kick was brutal ngl the medic in me wants to see the injuries.
