UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Can't archive this right now, if someone else could it'd be appreciated, though. Reddit are in full meltdown on both /r/LabourUK and /r/ukpolitics over the news, so if anyone wants to mine seetheralds, now would be a great time to get your pickaxes ready.

News just in:
Weasely little cunt got away with it, Starmer will dodge inquiry over the Mandelson scandal.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer will not face a parliamentary investigation over claims he misled MPs about the process to appoint Lord Mandelson as US ambassador.

The government won the vote by 335 to 223 - with 14 Labour MPs rebelling.

Leader of the Opposition Kemi Badenoch accused the majority of Labour MPs of being "complicit" in a "cover up". Lib Dem leader Ed Davey said Starmer had "ducked" scrutiny over the issue, saying it was a "cowardly way to govern".

Starmer has denied misleading MPs. A No 10 spokesperson called the vote a "desperate political stunt" ahead of next week's elections, and said the government will continue to engage "with the two parliamentary processes that are running on Peter Mandelson’s appointment with full transparency".

Earlier in the day, former top civil servant in the Foreign Office, Philip Barton, said No 10 was "uninterested" in his concerns over Mandelson's links to Epstein.

And former top aide to Starmer, Morgan McSweeney, said he made a "serious mistake" in advising the PM to appoint the former ambassador, but said Mandelson hadn't been "open enough".

"Britain is Weak and Unreliable"

"They don't share our values, they will put people in prison for thought crimes"

"They don't defend the western values that they were built on"

"this is a country that has seriously backtracked on its heritage and legacy".

"If Britain was a functioning society, which it is clearly not anymore"

Teacher said baby was 'dead meat', jury hears

1777409578063.jpeg
Jamie Varley, 37, is accused of killing 13-month-old Preston Davey

A former teacher accused of sexually abusing and killing an adopted baby said the child was "dead meat" and that he had "murdered" him in the weeks before the infant died, a court heard.

Jamie Varley, 37, and his partner John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, adopted 13-month-old Preston Davey, in April 2023, Preston Crown Court heard.

For just under four months after his adoption he was allegedly routinely ill-treated and suffered 40 traumatic injuries at the defendants' home in Blackpool, jurors were told.

He died in hospital on 27 July 2023. Varley denies murder and McGowan-Fazakerley denies allowing the death of a child, as well as multiple other offences.
  • Warning: The following court evidence contains information some readers may find distressing
After undergoing an assessment and familiarisation process Preston was adopted and began living with the defendants on 1 April 2023.

But just days later Varley, who took a year off work as head of year at high school to adopt a child, confessed he was struggling with a lack of sleep due to the baby constantly waking in the night, a jury heard.

On 6 April, he texted his sister, a baby sleep trainer: "He's dead meat today. Didn't sleep last night after 11.30. Up every, one and a half hours."

Four days later, Varley sent his mother Karen Graham, a video of Preston in his walker, and she replied: "Clever boy xxx"

Varley then replied: "This was before he was murdered and put to bed."

He texted his friend: "First sleep over. I wanted to put him in the field with the cows," but went on to describe Preston as a "ray of sunshine".

Varley said the child was "refusing" to go to sleep, is "very needy" and texted another friend: "He's just annoying. Lol."

He went on to tell the friend: "Right now we are questioning every choice."

In other messages Varley said Preston is "crying all the time", and that they were "really struggling" as the lack of sleep was a "nightmare".

'Perfectly healthy baby'

Foster parent Sandra Cooper looked after Preston for 10 months after his birth in June 2022. He had been taken into care by Oldham Council when he was five days old.

Mrs Cooper, in a statement read to the jury, said: "Preston was a very happy baby."

She said while he was "not a good sleeper" he quickly went back to sleep by having his head stroked.

Mrs Cooper said after Preston's dairy intolerance was identified and his milk changed, the child was "happy and content", adding: "Preston was a perfectly healthy baby."

Mrs Cooper handed Preston over to the defendants at the end of March 2023, but Preston was taken to hospital three times - once with a fractured left elbow - in the following months, the jury heard.

On 27 July 2023 the baby was rushed to hospital by the defendants, unconscious and in a state of cardiac arrest, and medics could not revive him.

Varley told police the he had briefly left the child in the bath and when he returned he was drowning.

A post-mortem examination found multiple non-accidental, internal and external injuries, and a cause of death to be acute upper airways obstruction by either smothering or an object or objects inserted into his mouth.

Varley denies murder, manslaughter, two counts of assault by penetration, five counts of cruelty to a child, grievous bodily harm, sexual assault of a child, 13 counts of taking indecent photos or videos of a child, one of distributing an indecent photo of a child to his co-accused, and one of making an indecent photo.

McGowan-Fazakerley denies allowing the death of a child, three counts of child cruelty and one count of the sexual assault of a child.

The trial continues.

I'm not a pussy when it comes to content warnings usually, but I'd strongly recommend that nobody reads the post above about the baby. It's legitimately horrifying and I immediately regretted having read it the moment I finished doing so. There truly are not enough layers in Hell to accomodate some of these "people"

Every time I think I might come off my position that the death penalty should not be something the Government does, a story like this comes along and I think. "Damn, I am glad I live in a country where we still stand people up against the wall."

The family who had fostered him before he was given up to his fate have been required to attend the trial for the last few sessions. I honestly don't know how they could cope with it all.

Tehran’s ambassador to London summoned over ‘unacceptable and inflammatory’ post on Telegram that some fear could encourage violence in Britain

Tehran has sought to whip up support across the Iranian diaspora

Iran’s embassy in London is being investigated by counterterror police after it used a social media post to encourage regime supporters living in Britain to sign up to a martyrdom programme.

The Foreign Office summoned Tehran’s UK ambassador over the “unacceptable and inflammatory” message, which prompted suggestions that it was encouraging violence on British streets.

Scotland Yard detectives and ministers intervened after it emerged that consulate officials had urged UK residents “devoted to Iran” to register for the “sacrifice for the homeland” initiative.

Iran’s UK embassy posted about the campaign on Telegram

The endorsement of the janfada (“self-sacrifice”) campaign by Iran’s London mission raised concerns about its diplomatic activities in the UK at a time of heightened tensions.

The Metropolitan Police said counterterror officers were assessing the post to determine whether action was required.
At the same time, the Foreign Office minister Hamish Falconer said Iran’s ambassador, Seyed Ali Mousavi, had been called in to discuss the matter. He told Mousavi the embassy “must cease any form of communications that could be interpreted as encouraging violence in the UK or internationally”.
The government said that it would “take all measures necessary” to protect the British people in the face of Iran’s “malign activities on UK soil”.

There is growing evidence that Iran has been involved in recent attacks against the Jewish community in the UK, as well as against Iranian dissidents. Its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the brutal force behind decades of repression in Iran, is believed to have orchestrated many of the attacks through proxies.

Commentators said the post on the embassy’s official channel on the messaging app Telegram this month acted as a call to find British martyrs. The post, written in Farsi, was headed “Patriotism comes from faith” and said those who joined the campaign would “demonstrate [their] commitment to the dignity and pride of the homeland”.

The campaign was launched by the Islamic Republic earlier this year to mobilise grassroots support after the United States threatened a ground invasion. Millions of Iranians, including the country’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian, are said to have signed up to “defend the territorial integrity” of the country, which is in conflict with the United States.

The Telegram post included a link to the Mikhak online portal used by the Iranian foreign ministry to handle passport applications and other consular matters. The post said those seeking to register for the campaign could do so through the system.

The message ended by quoting lines from the Shahnameh (“Book of Kings”), an 11th-century epic poem seen as a defining text in Iranian culture: “If every one of us is beheaded and killed, it is better than handing over the country to the enemy.”

It is unclear what registration for the campaign entails but commentators said it was a clear attempt to make the diaspora pledge allegiance to the IRGC.

The call for participation in the campaign has been shared by Iranian embassies across the world, from Australia to Sri Lanka. Australian federal police last week said that they were looking into a post promoting the campaign by Iran’s embassy in Canberra that was subsequently deleted.

The campaign is part of an effort by Tehran to silence dissident voices after military attacks led by the US and Israel. An official website for the campaign said that it would allow people “to play an effective role in confronting the American-Zionist enemy and defending Islamic Iran”. Women have been allowed to sign up, though they are prevented from carrying out official combat duties.

United4Mahsa, an Iranian rights organisation, said the activity by the London embassy raised serious concerns about acts of terrorism being carried out in the UK. Haleh Blake, a founder of the group, said: “I read this as a co-ordinated plan to carry out terrorist activities. To me, this is inciting violence.”

Another female British Iranian, speaking anonymously, said: “This message from the Islamic Republic’s London embassy is deeply troubling to many of us in the Iranian diaspora. Invoking patriotism and national pride to recruit Iranians abroad — using language like, ‘We will all sacrifice ourselves for the homeland’ — reads as a mobilisation call from a regime that has spent decades brutalising its own people.”

She said the regime was “attempting to extend its reach and legitimacy onto foreign soil, into our communities”.

This month, the Iranian-linked Islamist group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia claimed responsibility for an arson attack at the Kenton United synagogue in Harrow, northwest London. It was the latest in a spate of attacks on the Jewish community within a week claimed by the group, which is being investigated by UK intelligence services over its links to the Iranian state.

Amid pressure from Labour MPs, Sir Keir Starmer confirmed last week that he would introduce legislation to proscribe the IRGC and other state-sponsored groups in the King’s Speech next month.

A counterterrorism policing spokesman said: “We are aware of the post allegedly linked to the Iranian embassy and specialist officers are in the process of assessing this to determine whether any further police action may be required.”

Got this today. Sadly, highly appropriate and very, very true.

I’d rather have the poodle as PM than Starmer, tbf.

That’s also the biggest bulldog I’ve ever seen.

The YouTube algo chucked me a video of ‘thirty things you miss from the 70s in Britain’ type stuff, and I was distraught by the end of it. Take me fucking back, please. I can handle the blackouts and the high interest rates. Decent tradein for social media and a country overrun with idiots. What was really striking is how so many people today claim poverty (or go into debt) while their homes are full of electronics and fancy furnishings, they go away on holiday on the credit card and regard shopping as an acceptable hobby. I’m either too old or too tight for today’s world, possibly both.

You can’t even portion up your wages in little envelopes for gas, rent, electric etc any more, as it’s all digital and you never get to hold your money in your hands now. The trust we put in the digital banking system is really terrifying.

Old codger shouts at clouds etc.

They must be devastated. Cannot imagine how traumatic it must be for them. Taken from a decent family and given up to monsters, it’s every parent’s worst nightmare.

You can’t hate the Guardian enough.

The implication from this kike-made ‘fellow white people’ faggot being that Charles should’ve referenced ‘Bad Bunny’ or ‘Charli XCX’ and that would’ve increased the intrinsic value of his words.

These little snarky asides are really annoying. I get that that’s exactly why they throw them in, but still, it’s smug, sneering Reddit/Bluesky shit.

Can I say I've never really understood fostering? for both children and animals; you are taking someone vulnerable, often with a traumatic and psychologically harmful upbringing that will damage their ability to connect and bond with other humans, and telling them the home they are in for now is temporary? Why not just adopt? I get temporary/emergency fostering before being moved to a permanent house (ie no more than a few weeks) but sometimes you see young kids who have been fostered by a family for 1-2 years and then get adopted out, it seems like it'd just fuck with them so much. From my experience with fostering in the West Mids as well, foster families seem to have MUCH higher standards and requirements to foster kids (even down to ensuring every plug socket has a cover) but they just seem to let any old gay guy adopt : / It also always seems cruel to me when someone fosters an elderly cat who's scared, gains its trust, and then hands it off to another house full of different people and smells.

On a slightly more positive note, RestoreUK is continuing with the public cleanups. They have Restore UK hi-vis now. The Greenwich lot are doing another river clean up, and the Coleshill South and Arley Councillor is out cleaning road signs and trimming back hedges. Seen a LOT of non-council-workers doing videos cleaning up parks, road signs, trimming hedges, etc, the last few months. Very good and visible campaigning if u ask me, especially with Restore's policy of 'those who want to claim benefits must partake in clean ups'. Modern people have a very low view of cleaning jobs, bin-men, manual labourers, etc (and want to give those jobs to the lowly browns), so it's good to see the councillors and campaigners actually get on with some work.

What exactly do these faggots want? For the King to go over and call Trump a big orange nigger and slap him across the face with his cock before saying "inshallah" or something? These people would sooner start a literal war with America and kill millions of working class people than try to defuse a touchy political situation and improve our relationship with our trade partners and allies. I don't like the King, but I don't really see how they can criticise him for this. Unhinged.

“The suspects in the case are men and women and are American, Mexican, British, German and Spanish.” -

Yeah of course they fucking are, every one of those needs to be in inverted commas. A kitten born in a stable is not a foal.

“AROPL moved its headquarters to the UK in 2021 from Sweden, where they were investigated by immigration authorities, who issued deportation orders to dozens of its members. The Guardian has previously reported that the group was being investigated by the Home Office over its use of skilled worker visas.” -

Sweden wouldn’t fucking have them, but they were able to trench themselves in the UK. How many claim benefits I wonder?
