UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679 (https://archive.ph/5Ba6o)

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

No matter what happens the lulz and salt will flow.

I love the fact it's really sunk to a point where "we let you vote but do it wrong so instead of taking the vote away from you we will let you have it and just make it not worth anything because we are in support of freedom, as long as it does what we want."

Frankly, I think there will be another can kick. It's amazing how great they have become at it.

I hope it passes tbh. The main thing is for us to get out on 29 March.

I don't know how anyone can look at the EU right now and think yeah, we really should stay in that.

I predict the worst possible outcome, whatever that may be. You can't salvage a train-wreck after it's already left the tracks, and in this case it left the tracks the instant the referendum was announced to begin with.

Just go no deal you cucks. I mean fuck how hard is it to just leave a political union with huge entrenchment, massive special interest groups and my Russia.

I'm ashamed of our government, not because it's arguing but because Boris Johnson hasn't once been racist accidentally within the last few weeks

He's keeping quiet, which for a Tory, means he's planning a leadership bid.

We're probably going to up with either of these scenarios.

The first scenario is that the deal is rejected by commons, a vote of no-confidence is launched by Labour which ends up with May being removed as Prime Minister. The UK's own yellow vest protests begin in London as Brexiteers and Remainers begin clashing in the street.

The second scenario is the deal is rejected and a General Election is held, with Labour gaining enough seats to form a coalition, stopping Brexit and strengthening ties with the EU, which will impose more regulations as punishment to deter other countries from leaving.

There's no way the deal will be accepted today, everyone is concerned about tomorrow and god knows what'll happen in March. Most of us down here in the south think there's going to be something major happening in February as a consequence of this vote. Whether it be another referendum or another general election, we're all worried especially those with booked holidays as the pound is bound to tank.

No deal is best deal at this point.

May is a betrayer and a cuck. The UK had the better hand seeing as they're the buyers from not the sellers to the EU, buyers of products that are just as easily acquired (if not actually cheaper or of superior quality) from non-EU states like the U.S.

And what did they do with it? Pissed about and pleaded when they had the potential to demand far more than they did.

Also, anyone campaigning for the "Peoples Vote" is exceptional and needs a quick recap on what a referendum actually is.

The only reason I'm hoping we don't see a general election is because of how detached from reality Labor has been for the past few years and how shitty the rest of the Tory candidates are too.

The people old enough to remember what Britain was actually like when it wasn't part of the EU and doing pretty-much exactly what you're saying would like to disagree.

You mean the same people who were asked if they wanted to the join the European Economic Area?

Lets not forget the UK public was never asked if it wanted to the join the EU, and the polls of the time strongly suggested they weren't keen on the idea; for many of the same reasons leave voters stated this time around.

What was so dreadful about Britain back before the EU came along to pay buisnesses not to set up shop here and try Poland instead?

Powerlevel: I'm a dual national and remain an EU citizen anyway whatever way things go.

Nearly three years of absolute fucking madness, all because the Tories couldn't stop fighting among themselves. Brexit is essentially a drawn out leadership contest, where everyone loses.

The UK didn't vote to leave the EU, England did. Scotland and Northern Ireland have been treated with far more respect by the EU, as opposed to the contempt from Westminster.

Not to mention that the second they get let back on the sinking ship that is the EU, all that will happen is that Mutter Merkel and all of Brussels is going to rake the UK over the coals to scare the Southern and Eastern EU members from trying to make their own exit so it can keep being the zombie Fourth Reich that it is

UK, muster up what little semblance of testicles you have left and tell these people to go fuck themselves

Scotland had a chance to leave and said no, so they've got no excuse to whine.
Northern Ireland is always welcome to try and reunite with the Republic (oh wait).

The UK, as one entity, voted to leave. This is the price you pay for riding another nations coat-tails Scotland. At least the Republic of Ireland had the balls to strike out on their own.

The UK, as one entity, voted to leave. Shoulda, woulda, coulda about the Scotch independance.

Part of the reason Scots voted against independence in 2014 was because Westminster (especially Cameron) promised that the UK would remain in the EU for the foreseeable future, and that there wouldn't be a referendum.

Prior to the EU, the average UK citizen lived on a diet that consisted of about 50% baked beans by weight. Unemployment was absurdly high, and the standards of living for anyone who didn't have a steady job with a pension option were absurdly low. When people look back and see good times, they hear the opinions of the minority who profited from the few industries that were still relevant, but were inevitably doomed to obsolescence the moment China became an economic superpower. The average commoner was dirt poor and didn't have access to facilities even a drug-addled homeless man takes for granted today.

For the foreseeable aye. I don't think anyone actually expected leaving the EU to actually be the result with the amount of money and propaganda the Tories poured into it.

But then again, politicians of all stripes lie, as the Brexiter's have also discovered.

They chose to remain part of the UK, for better and for worse.

Okay, sweetie. We're a pretty similar age, and we both know that's bullshit.

Citizens of the UK enjoyed a far higher standard of living than most of Europe (Sans perhaps the Nordic states, much like today). The United Kingdom consistently from the very beginning has given more funding to the EU every year than it has claimed back.

The EU has made the UK poorer. Far, far poorer. I'm not optimistic enough to assume the money no longer being paid to the EU after the divorce is wrapped up will actually be seen in the public purse, but at least it's not going to an undemocratic monolith bleeding the country dry.

Okay, sure, just disregard the personal experience of a large part of my extended family. Have you ever heard of the bean wars? Apparently not.

Also, regardless of how much money the UK pays to the EU, the fact remains they waste far more money than that through plain old incompetence. Blaming the EU for making the UK poor when the UK is busy spending untold billions on useless military projects and related schemes that even the average idiot can tell are going to accomplish absolutely nothing is blatantly shifting the blame to an unaccountable third party.

Edit: I really love how personal experience is discarded as 'anecdotal', while speculative analysis filled with 'maybes' and opinions from disconnected third-parties is presented as fact.

Because personal anecdote makes for solid evidence.

Wasted or not, it's money being wasted by the UK itself on the whims of its own citizens rather than it being handed off to a foreign power without any say in how it is used just because. (No taxation without representation, our American freinds?)

I'd much rather May be pissing it up the wall than it going towards the next social Junker's too drunk to attend.
