UK British News Megathread - aka CWCissey's news thread

https://news.sky.com/story/row-over-new-greggs-vegan-sausage-rolls-heats-up-11597679

A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

This is great news for property owners in "disadvantaged" locations; the Chinese will buy up blocks.
Oh god its the Burakumin Book but in reverse.

I don't see a problem with this, they aren't using race they are using level of wealth. The system they are using is wide open to abuse - judging by poorest district seems like a strange thing to do too - but if they are going to do some stupid shit to combat their poor public image I would prefer they do something like this as opposed to restricting it to 'Asians' or women something. And if they are just giving them a chance they otherwise wouldn't have taken but are qualified for - which is what this article implies - then great.
I have a problem tying it to location. Why not just make the kid show his and his parents W-2s?

Thing is what if youre like the richest person in that area. Again like a landowner. Or the one middle class white family that just lives in the ghetto for some fucking reason (pretty sure at least one of those exists).

I bet you will get middle class families that will find out these areas and move to them just to get an edge for their kids. It wouldn't be the worst thing someone has done to improve their kid's education.

I assume a similar idea would be good across the pond too.

Not until Eton does the same thing.

If The Bullingdon Club think they're depraved now, wait until one of the oiks joins their ranks and shows them a really good time.

Watch they build another gay little train set and this one gets smashed up too.

Watch them buy out Northern Rail and make the railways great again.

It couldn't get any worse...

A former care worker has inherited a manor house after a DNA test proved he was the heir to a country estate.
Jordan Adlard Rogers, 31, only found out his father was Charles Rogers after his death in 2018, Cornwall Live reported.
Mr Rogers' family had lived in the 1,536-acre Penrose Estate between Helston and Porthleven for generations.
The family gifted the estate to the National Trust in 1974 in exchange for a 1,000-year lease to live there.
Mr Adlard Rogers said he knew from the age of eight that Mr Rogers may be his father and made several unsuccessful attempts to get a DNA test done.
He said after his father died he was finally able to get the test completed.

An inquest last week heard Mr Rogers spent 40 years living as a drug addict and a recluse before dying in his car following an overdose on a heroin substitute.
Charles Rogers' brother had been a pilot with the RAF and his dad a lieutenant commander in the Royal Navy, "so he had big shoes to fill", Mr Adlard Rogers said.
"He was under huge pressure taking it on, but he was different and a free spirit."
"There was always a pressure of him trying to match expectation," Mr Adlard Rogers added.
The estate makes money from investments in stocks and shares and renting a number of parcels of land to local farmers.

Mr Adlard Rogers told Cornwall Live he plans to set up a charity to help people in nearby Porthleven and Helston with his new-found wealth.
"People say I'm lucky but I would trade anything to be able to go back and for Charles to know I was his son," he said.
"Maybe then he might have taken a different path."

It's kind of funny that this guy made a better go of his life than his supposedly noble father did, who was apparently a drug addict for the last 40 years and OD'd on methadone.

I don't know what that is but if it's train related it's euro sounding which makes it gay.

A local franchise of the British national rail conglomerate Network Rail. It's quite possibly the worst one even after Southern Rail which has been striking on every bank holiday for the last two years.

He doesn't own the estate, the National Trust own it as the family gifted it to the NT in exchange for a 1000 year lease to live there and £52k a year to live on which means it's also probably open to the public too. It's probably the best deal as he gets the house to live in and gets a decent wage and the National Trust has to pay for all the maintenance on the estate.

Not until Eton does the same thing.

Based on the Eton graduates i saw on TV growing up i held it in a very low regard.

Eventually i came to realise that modern politics attracts the spergs of Eton graduates, they stand to make far more by siphoning money from the Arabs, Russians and more recently the Indians that aspire to be "upper-class" in the old-fashioned sense.

I remember people in my graduating class who couldn't even crack the top quarter of our graduating class transfered to lower performing/competitive schools so they could easily get in the top 10 percent and get into any public university which was very smart since Texas has the Top Ten percent law.

I question the efficacy. A more comprehensive profile is needed imo. Not a statician but I would think you'd want to look at average household earnings, family history (education background of parent(s)/guardian(s), psychological status), Family structure (One parent? Two? Which one? Foster parents? Relative guardian?) Which schools did they go to? Did they participate in free lunch programs? What kind of benefits did the household claim? I'm sure you could think of more off the top of your head.

They did that at my middle school. Imported the worst into a nice school, and turned it into a war zone. A decade later the school had to be demolished as it was so far gone. "Their schools are shit, we need to let them in ours. Oh, now our schools are shit, how did that happen?" Then they did it again and got the same results, ruining every school on the city except the couple that admittance was based on intelligence tests.

Those neighborhoods are now a hotbed of drive-bys, rapes, and looks like a 3rd world country. Garbage in, garbage out.

Because employers take that shit seriously.
Granted they do, but if you get even one year's worth of experience under your belt in the job field you're entering, most employers are going to pick you over the guy fresh out of Oxford. So really at best, you're spending a ton of money for a tiny head start.

Really, I think the best way a fresh out of high school kid with little to no money can set himself up is to
1: Figure out what he wants to do
2: Join any military branch in some mos which is closely related to what they want to do for the minimum contract (e.g I want to be a doctor, so I'll go 68 whiskey)
3: Knock out some online classes while you're in
4: Try to save up money (this is easier said than done I know)
5: Get out, and go right to college under the GI bill
6: You're going to med school, and the GI bill wont cover all of that, but that's what you saved up money for right? So your student loans wont be too bad, and you can likely get a Pell grant
7: Now you're slightly older than all of the other grads, and have both experience in the field, and a military record

That's a pretty solid plan, and I picked what is likely the hardest field to do it with as an example.

Edit:
Don't be one of those faggots who thinks they can make a career out of enlisted service, and enlist for six years or something. Your odds of ever having a successful military career as enlisted are less than 1 in 100, and half the fags who make it past E5 end up with PTSD, serious medical problems, and/or 2+ divorces.
