Why are people putting bacon in with brussel sprouts? Are they obese?

Adding bacon to things is a sign of defeat, both in cooking and in life in general. Bacon is not necessary nor welcome in my brussel sprout dishes.

Change of plans: My mother and I are making brussels sprouts with shallots and Worcestershire sauce for Thanksgiving. I'll make the balsamic-honey ones for Christmas (yes, we have Christmas dinner even though we're Jewish).
Jewish people have events for both Christmas and Hanukkah? That's like twice as much holiday. That's not fair.

I tried a new recipe with brussel sprouts by adding pancetta to it and it turned out okay but I enjoy them by themselves save a little olive oil, salt, and pepper.

I start by preheating the oven to 400 F.

Next I prepare them by cutting off the stem, washing, and halving them.

About two table spoons of olive oil in a hot skillet and warm that olive oil up for about 45 seconds to 1 minute.

Toss in brussel sprouts and cook for about three minutes.

Put them in the oven for about 15-20 minutes with turning them over / shuffling them halfway.

Warm up the skilled again and toss the brussel sprouts from the oven into the skillet for about three minutes and leave them for serving.

Personally, I use the Kroger 5 Salt and 5 Pepper in addition to fresh ground peppercorns for seasoning.

I make them like most on this thread with a little of olive oil and salt then roasting.

What I like to do is keep them in the oven for a bit longer so they go black on the outside. They look burnt but it's only the outside layer and it gives a nice bit of crispness to the sprout.

Never understood why it became such a meme to hate on them.
I think it stems from people's elderly relatives not being able to cook them the right way.

When they're roasted they're sublime. I have memories of Christmas dinners though where I tried them and remembered them being disgusting. I think people were boiling them.

I love roasting them tossed in oil and salt, usually with other veggies and some sausages all on one pan for an easy "I'm too lazy to really cook but I want to eat something that isn't trash".

I think the trick to not having the sulfer taste is removing the outer leaves and cutting them in half, and not crowding your pan too much. I'm very guilty of the latter. If you roast sprouts just on their own the texture is great, but if you squeeze them on a pan with a ton of other things they just don't roast as well.

I try to like them but I don't. There's many recipes that I have tried over the years but it's not for me and it boils down to me not liking cooked cabbage. Raw cabbage is great though.
So I make it for other people who like it at christmas but don't eat it myself.

If you slice them in half and roast them in butter and olive oil with some garlic and parmesan cheese, they're fantastic.
This is pretty much my go to method for preparing sprouts either on pan or in the oven. It works best if you lie them flat side down and do not disturb them until that side is caramelized. Then a quick roast on the other side and finish with lemon juice is all that's needed for basic sprouts. Parmesan or a little bit of browned bacon bits work well as a topping if you want one. Almonds and hazelnuts work pretty well too. Basil, marjoram, and fresh thyme are herbs that tend to work best with sprouts.

It complements sprout's favor very well and you don't need much at all. A small handful of bacon bits is all that's needed to elevate the flavor. It's up there with Parmesan, butter, lemon juice, and vinaigrette as far as pairing with sprouts goes. If bacon is beneath you, prosciutto works well too and you don't even need to cook it before topping your sprouts.

I think the sprouts are fine boiled, it's just easier to fuck them up that way then it is when you roast them. Either way, the most important thing is salt, pepper, and butter.

i LOVE them..we have a pork roast every week, and i like to make that with mashed potatoes and gravy made from the pork drippings, buttered brussels sprouts, and pickled beets. that, and you can sort of caramelize them too, i guess.

Brussels sprouts are meant to be eaten roasted and seasoned, which is why Angloids hate them so much.

But even when they’re steamed I don’t mind eating them, because I feel like a big giant eating whole cabbages.

Broccoli (baby trees) gives a similar pleasure, and I like it boiled but I also like it roasted with rice, boiled with carrots and then drizzled in melted cheese, chopped up cold and mixed with mayonnaise (like a salad), and sautéed in bacon grease and used to top pasta dishes. Broccoli is very versatile.

It's become a meme fact lately, but it is actually true that Brussels sprouts have changed to be less bitter due to selective breeding in the last 15-20 years.

Anyway, I usually prefer to roast mine in an air fryer drizzled in olive oil and sprinkled with some Badia complete seasoning or onion powder, pepper, and garlic salt until the outer leaves just start to char and crisp up.

Brussel sprouts are so gross, I've always had a special hate for them (:_(

I LOVE Brussels sprouts, I have several steam-bags of Balsamic sprouts frozen and ready to go whenever I want them.

I know so many people who say they hate Brussels sprouts without even trying them. I blame 90's cartoons - for some weird reason every cartoon across every network had an episode about how either broccoli or Brussels sprouts are so disgusting. I'm serious, WHY was that a thing?
Imo, it comes down to cafeteria food.

Brussel sprouts turn bitter when they are overcooked. They can also be somewhat bland if just boiled.

Most of the food you get in school is overcooked, and not much care is given to the seasoning. I guess people where just scarred from the horrible sprouts they were forced to eat as kids.
