So there is a bug when images are copied from a post which is later on deleted into another post (not image data copies where the image is uploaded to KF, but when you just select text+images and then copy+paste into a new post).

This means if a user posts a bunch of images, and others quote it or copy/paste those images and then at a later date the original poster deletes their posts then the images will not load for any logged out users (and likely many mobile users).

Example thread loaded in desktop browser:

I the error when viewing incognito (logged out):

The image loading is the same image link as in a logged-in session:

However its inaccessible from a logged-out browser, despite being a "public" image. If I wget the image via a shell I get an error 403:

EDIT:

(yeah that image loads fine, so its only images from posts or threads that have been deleted are unable to be accessed by accounts which are logged out. There may be good reason to do that though)

Ok this is supposedly expected behavior, which means it isn't a bug.

However it creates a sort of problematic "chain" when posts get deleted (purely to logged-out users, doesn't impact logged-in users at all).
  • Person signs up and makes post with pictures in it
  • Post is repeatedly quoted/copied on forums
  • Person decides to delete all their posts (or just that one)
  • All posts quoting or referencing the original post will show broken images when a user is not logged in.
