Butch Wicked is the queer musical event of our dreams

The Wicked movie may already be pretty gay, with no shortage of queer talent behind the scenes and its lead characters Elphaba and Glinda being shipped like crazy (including by Ariana Grande herself). But an even gayer version of Wicked is taking over TikTok after a weekend of performances in Brooklyn: Butch Wicked.

Butch Wicked is exactly what it sounds like: Wicked, but every character is a butch. Elphaba’s a butch. Glinda’s a butch. Fiyero’s a butch. The entire ensemble is butches. The show’s poster asks, “what if Dorothy wished for the masc shortage to be over instead of going home to the middle of bumf*ck nowhere?” It’s just as amazing as it sounds, and a series of viral clips from the show prove it.

On TikTok, songs from Butch Wicked including “What Is This Feeling?”, “No One Mourns The Wicked,” “Popular,” and more are all racking up tens of thousands of views, with fans clamoring for more and more content.

The show was such a success, in fact, that it’s coming back for two more dates in January — but sadly, a post on the show’s Instagram says they’re already sold out apart from “limited tickets available at the door.” Luckily, an edited version of the full show will be posted online soon, and there are “more shows to come.” A Butch Wicked national tour, perhaps? Fingers crossed, folks.

Butch Wicked’s producer Pearl Emerson (who also sang “Popular” in the show) shared their thoughts on the production in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“i started the show each night by making the crowd yell ‘art will save us’ at me, because i needed a reminder,” Emerson wrote. “i forget sometimes! when i’m wrapped up in wanting to be part of industries and communities that don’t have the imagination to include me / but i have more than enough imagination i think”

“OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A DEMAND FOR RADICAL EARNEST CRINGE SEXY QUEER ART AND INCLUDING TRANS COLLABORATORS WILL ONLY MAKE YOUR AUDIENCE WIDER AND HOTTER,” they added.

Hopefully, this is only the start of a wave of all-butch takes on musicals. Butch Phantom? Butch Les Mis? Butch Mamma Mia? The possibilities are endless.

Gosh.
It's almost like they don't have the talent to create an original musical.

Quite looking forward to hearing "Defying Sanity" though...

Theater kids have found a way to make Wicked gayer.

I don't think bringing back bullying will be enough to stop them.
