Are any of you into cake decorating or at least making your food more aesthetically pleasing? I noticed there wasn't a thread about this here. I took a few cake decorating classes back when Michael's offered them as well as a few classes offered at the local community college open to anyone and I was really into them, but I haven't really decorated a cake in a while, mostly because I don't have the space to do it plus the extra clean up not to mention I don't really eat cake very often. The most I do is decorate cookies during Christmas, but I want to try to get back into it eventually.

It's such a pain in the ass, and I suck at it. I love seeing other people's work but I just cannot decorate a cake to save my life.

I help people after they're mostly done. My favorite decorations are my own saliva and stomach acid. It really finishes the whole thing off, if you know what I mean.

We use basic beginner flat cake spatulas and use a fork for lifting at high merengues. Frequently lose frosting tips or don't know where we are...had to eye-gauge if it was too uneven tonight.
Was taught again on caramelization (when caramel drips to a clear line from a teaspoon in order to make merengue; takes patience

I used to enjoy it...I dread it due to shit motor skills with fingers.

I'm no good artistic endeavors as far as the icing's appearance goes, but I make a damn fine cream cheese-buttercream icing and make up for my lack of artistic talents with it by making chocolate garnishes. I love dying white chocolate to paint the inside of a mold's cavity and then filling it with milk or dark chocolate; sometimes with a center filling like peanut butter if it's a particularly thick mold used for boxed-style chocolates. Details like spiderwebs and spider legs on little gravestones are tedious, but very much worth it.

I miss baking cakes, making icing and making chocolates.

Cake decorating was the one area I failed when I took a gourmet cooking class. Fuck me dead.

I can decorate cookies though, for whatever reason. Frosting cakes will be the bane of my existence but I enjoy talking about cakes and frosting nonetheless.

Took a class at Michaels a long time ago with my mom just as a little bonding thing. Super fun class, but what was even more fun was making fun of the other mom and daughter with matching fucking monogrammed aprons who took the whole thing way too seriously.
I love it as a hobby, but shit can get expensive real quick.

If you want to laugh at some bad cake decorating then i recommend cake wrecks. It's an old blog (2008 i think) and still going. Old images have been sadly corrupted or can't work/show.
Most of the cakes posted are rushed decorations from generic non-specialized bakeries but it's still funny to gawk at. They also post good cake decoratings on sundays.

Some pics I've seen:

holy shit, I love Cake Wrecks, my favorite cakes are people who literally write the instructions on the cake or take things really literally.

I do feel bad though for the people who get these cakes for their wedding. That is always why you always look at their portfolios

Those cakes dont look like you can eat them.
