Call of Duty Thread - Potential return to form? Or nothing but cope on the horizon? You decide!

Is it me or is Vanguard a step down from WW2? This game is basically a $60-70 reskin of Modern Warfare 2019. No originality whatsoever. You'd be better off getting MW2019 and Cold War.
It and Cold War were unnecessary in my eyes.

First, MW2019 was still selling great and was generally well liked, so the amount of hype for the new games wasn't very strong. Second, they were both developed during the peak of COVID-19, so resources were going to get stretched thin as a result of working from home. Thirdly, both games, Cold War especially, went through extremely rushed and troubled productions, so another year in the cooker would've been the smart thing to do. Finally, whereas MW2019, while not always successful, did at least make great strides in moving the series forward, CW and Vanguard decided to take steps backwards into the same, safe, predictable, and boring formula that had been ran dry. MW2019 coming out before only made the dated aspects in those two games stand out even more.

Again, Activision can't seem to grasp their head around delaying a COD titles. Investors come first I guess.

Cold War needed to reestablish the Black Ops canon after the disastrous Black Ops 3 and 4. The arcade focus with gunplay helped differentiate it from Modern Warfare. I do think it could've used more time in the oven, especially factoring COVID and the runaway success of Modern Warfare.

The two games could've co-existed. Similar experiences but different enough to stand out. Now, Vanguard is entirely unnecessary. Lacklustre compared to their previous installment: WW2.

Only the smartest peeps (a.k.a none) would think MW2019 is great, especially the campaign which felt like shock value than a valued story. The only saving grace of the game is the guns and how other games are modding those guns to their respective games to save you money from buying the original product.

BlueDrake had a video about that, people have extracted the weapons from MW2019 and ported them to Garry's Mod where other people are making experimental modes with AI enemies.

Vanguard is utterly exceptional. I've given up after the first couple of chapters.
I've watched Synthetic Man suffer through the campaign. How could they make a CoD game like that with a ridiculous group of characters and think that it's ok?

You know you've fucked up when even KOTAKU is shitting on your fake performative wokeness

Is Vanguard a direct sequel to WW2 or its own thing? How would this even fit into Warzone lore?

lol @ Warzone lore

Apparently it fits because Adler found the creator of Vanguard hiding in a Nazi bunker in Verdansk and he says Warzone started in the Pacific.

hot take: infinite warfare is actually the best cod game
Best is pushing it but the game was solid, it also had a very high quality but overlooked zombies mode which was gimped by progressively worse DLC maps. I'm definitely not coping about dumping too much time into it.

Well, I'm not disappointed that they're angry at how an hotshot naval aviator finally learns some humility after fighting with the 93rd Infantry Division. Said something about them being "noble savages" when the same lesson can be taught by anyone else capable of doing this.

In fact, I'll save you the read and say that they're mostly angry that most of the game is historically inaccurate and the writer has no idea how much time goes into training new soldiers (usually a few months).

But anyways, article archive.

Can't say I agree with you there.

Sure the campaign did rely a bit too much on shock value, but in terms of the missions and the like, I thought they were varied and included several standout moments in the whole franchise. The multiplayer was divisive, but I on the whole enjoyed it as well, as I was able to adapt to the slower, more tactical style, which I also think was a breath of fresh air compared to the arcadey style the previous games were using. Spec Ops mode is the one I'm iffy on, as when it launched it was absolutely terrible, but did become somewhat decent with free DLC.

Hope this doesn't turn into yet another lengthy debate. All I'll say for now is that, while I get why some dislike it, for me at least, it ranks as my third favorite in the series, and one I really wish Activision didn't just throw away after only one year just to make that new yearly COD release.

Vanguard's campaign is linear, even for CoD standards. There's literally a train track during a non combative mission.

Who wrote this game? Every character is cheesy at best, irritating at worst. That Arthur guy is the worst of them all.
