One of the reasons why "conspiracy theories" start is because it's actually MORE comforting to think that a shadow cabal runs the country and knows what they are doing than the scary truth, which is that nobody is running anything and everyone in leadership is just as incompetent as they look.

Tbh I'd prefer incompetence over a shadow cabal. Stupidity is infuriating, but at least there's no direct intent to harm and screw over most of the population like there is with a shadow cabal.
