I based my statements off of the last election results, not on the city's overall character. If you're disagreeing with the election results, okay. Kitchener is very much a working class area, and Waterloo is super snobby. I would have guessed it was conservative too, but yeah
I disagree, I think the Sunshine List is a good thing to have. I think it makes things more transparent. I think it's good to know how much politicians or other important public figures earn. I do think that certain professions should be omitted from the list though, e.g., doctors or nurses like you said. I think that the $100k limit is also kind of low, maybe it made more sense 5-10 years ago when $100k was more than it is now. $100k in 2015 would be worth something like $130k because of inflation.
It's interesting to use the Sunshine List to see that the President of Conestoga College, John Tibbits, earns $636k a year, whereas the President of the University of Toronto, Meric Gertler, makes $555k a year. Obviously, the University of Toronto is much more important as an institution than Conestoga College, but since Conestoga College abuses federal immigration programs so much, they're able to pay Tibbits so much more. At the same time, Conestoga College and a lot of other colleges in that same caliber have been complaining all year about how the immigration reduction plans will hurt their schools, and they've apparently been closing programs because of financial constraint, yet somehow they can still afford to pay Tibbits $636k a year.
I've long feared that the government will raise the exit tax. I think as brain drain becomes more and more serious, and more and more young people start leaving, the government will try to make it exceedingly difficult to leave. You're already required to pay so much, but I could see them bumping up the rate to 50 or 60 percent in the next few years. I heard there were more emigrants this year than any year in the previous decade, and I'm sure that the rate of emigration will continue to rise.
Nah, it helps clear things up in public pay complaints. If a surgeon is making 101k gross in Toronto, nobody can say that they're overpaid. I make that much on the fuckin' Prairies. It's basically the lowest household income you can live on (god help you if you're married and the two of you combined are under 100k) Also if hospital secretaries complain about being underpaid and you find out they make 200k for answering the phone in a surly manner...
This is a good way of looking at it too. It might help someone in those careers recognize if they're being underpaid by comparison as well.
So bizarre to think about it. I remember when I was growing up, $100k was a really good salary. Now it can barely get you anything. The change in the COL over the past decade is such a mindfuck.
