It's almost fascinating how rapidly my own views are changing. I now believe things that I would've found abhorrent even just a couple of years ago. Previously I might've been content just to close the door to new arrivals, but now I want total deportation of all Indians from Canada, including those born here. Now I'm actually racist against Indians. And I just hate my own government for actively working to turn me into an impoverished minority in my own country. I choose to imagine there are a lot of Canadians who have become similarly racist in so short a period of time.

Just randomly browsing the wages for jobs in Alabama and a couple of other southern u.s states and was honestly fucking shocked.

Now the reason I did that because in Ontario I've heard people say "people here are struggling and it sucks sometimes but we're nothing like Alabama or another U.S state like that".

This is what I learned, their wages are almost double what ours are and even in some entry level jobs pay more. And most of the south is also cheap to live in. I've always heard that America was the more capitalist country and fucked the poor and rewarded the rich. But honestly.. that's a goddamn fucking lie. Outside of NYC, silicon valley and a handful of super expensive cities most of the U.S does not live under a greedy, all or nothing system. They have reasonable cost of living that allows people to actually make a living. They're not being flooded by hoards of immigrants from south asia to suppress wages either.

Canada is clearly the greedier country.

I've said numerous times to people who make fun of the 'dirty south' that living in a trailer in Alabama is better than the best Canada has to offer. Just by being in America and being on the grid you can fix whatever fucked up situation you find yourself in if you are willing to do something about it. All you need is a zip code and a tax id.

Repo market says Alabama was/is the worst state for auto delinquencies with about 1/5 of every vehicle on the road far behind on payments. To Americans comparing states economically that sounds incredibly bad. To me its a reminder that another good thing about America is that no matter how fucked, broke, unqualified or irresponsible you are there is always some segment of businesses willing to give you financing and a chance to get ahead. If getting ahead takes the form of wanting to drive a Charger to your wagie job at McDonald's or Walmart, no one is going to stop you.

One of the system's tricks in Canada is using state media and brainwashing people in Canada into the 'stiff upper lip' thing and thinking they shouldn't complain. This convinces people that everyone else is doing great and the problem must be you. That is statistically untrue and objectively false. It's a bit soon to check out... the dam is going to burst open at some point and a lot of people are going to realize they are all in the same boat. You could also consider a life of crime and plunder since there are no consequences.

Went to a McDonalds a meter away from the main walking street. There are more homeless people begging for change than there are customers.

Was warned against taking the subway, but did it anyways. I avoid taking the first train, because I can see a mentally disturbed man get aboard. As the train is leaving the platform, I can see him push people inside it and try to start shit.

On the way back, the subway is delayed for 15 minutes because there has been a “security incident” someone pulled a knife.

In the evening I go to Yonge street, all the weed stores, and they’re everywhere, don’t close till midnight. I go to a fast food chain, and there’s a homeless man who has made an encampment near the entrance. Like full on left his cart, backpack, clothes strewn around. He asks me if I want to smoke a joint, and then goes outside while warning me not to steal any of his shit.

The staff are just… Done. They’re too used to this shit, and don’t get paid to be social workers.

On the way back a bareassed woman, high on crack and with pantyhoses drawn on her legs with a magic marker stumbles around while yelling to herself.

The day before I had another homeless person knocking down shit and laying down in the middle of the street have a chimp out. I and another tourist called the police, because all the locals are used to this shit show. They came after half an hour.

Was talking with a zoomer I used to babysit in the 2000s who was asking for advice (he went to Uni in Toronto), and hes telling me that even engineering students can't find jobs currently.

Literal floods of people for minimum wage, Mc jobs (working airport security is a horrid job, its why the stereotype of sassy black woman with a scanner is a thing because the pay, hours, and lifestyle is awful and its literally one that used to attract the bottom of the barrel). Its insanity, honestly.

The part that actually pisses me off is you'll have this, yuppies will literally see everything youre describing, but will continue on with their lives, ignore it, continue with their yoga class, continue voting for the liberals or the NDP, etc. Ill butcher this, but in Hotel Rwanda (was anyone else from Ontario forced to watch that in the 7th or 8th grade way back in the day?), Paul Kagame talks about how people will look at those suffering on TV, comment on how its so sad, and then continue eating dinner, forgetting about it.

but its another when its your own city, where you live, somewhere where your voice should be able to directly affect things, the politics, etc

I seriously do not understand how people can live with themselves, seeing the mass homeless camps of once middle class people literally pan handling outside of their now million dollar apartments.

Used to volunteer with the homeless, and I will tell you- things are definitely different pre-pandemic compared with post. I was briefly back in Canada this year, and before covid-19, most of the homeless were either mentally ill or drug addicts, but they at least tried to keep their drug habit out of the public eye, and were a bit less brazen about their situation

When I returned, people would literally openly be on hard drugs in food lines, would shoot up in the street, would set up tents on the street where they shot up or would engage in prostitution, etc. You also have homeless occasionally assaulting volunteers who are trying to help them. Never happened before, I actually have to advise female volunteers to step back or to only work behind the counter in a food kitchen.

and now you have the tent cities, or shanty towns, with former middle class people mixed up amid all that.

Its insane to me.

That, and the general attitude towards TDS and all the trans stuff in this country since maybe 2015 was the breaking point for me as a former leftist, but every year, the country just gets more and more clown world.

It was one of the biggest ironies for me. Being more a left-libertarian, never voted liberal or NDP, used to believe it was up to individuals to solve their own problems and we shouldn't rely on the government, so I started with volunteering in person due to my bleeding heart I guess.

You have no idea how enraging it is to see people who have literally never left their basement, never actually helped someone out or seen what homeless communities are like- who just sits behind a keyboard all day and preaches about communism; start to not only lecture you on solutions for homelessness, but to call you a fascist or a racist as soon as you don't agree with them.

I can remember commenting on how drug legalization is going to cause major problems in homeless communities, how de-policing initiatives (ie, not arresting people for public intoxication) is going to backfire. On the Floyd stuff in the US, about how we probably needed more police, not less- to pay them more so they can do a proper job and not be as stressed and overstretched got me called a racist. How being casual on crime was going to actually harm the most vulnerable people on the street more than it would benefit them.

And these types of people are still in charge, thats the big doomer thing to me. All the hard work of trying to help people, gone to nothing because of the whims of laptop communists and neo-liberals.

Toronto has always kind of been "like that". Has always gone on to a degree but there was an equilibrium of some sort that made it more random and not as brazen. Police intervention was nearly instant. What changed, who knows. TO police are well compensated but doesn't make much sense to get stabbed, slashed, poked by needles or beaten up when the crazytards are going to be out on bail tomorrow. Not enough jails to hold them and NIMBY boomers and Karen's want encampments and shanty-towns broken up and to magically go away but want absolutely nothing to be done about the current social and economic conditions that create them. Practically speaking they can be sprinkled all over the city in a manner in which no one can respond or they can all be in the same spot and easily avoided or policed. Canadians will stand for extreme wealth disparity, death, drugs and neo-feudal cruelty but will not stand for any ghettos.

Weed being 2015 Canada's top electoral priority led to huge attempts at expansion and grabbing as much turf as possible in Ontario with dispensaries opening up more than fast food and coffee shops seemingly everywhere and then going under as fast as they opened. Grey market organized crime operations still do it better and have better customer service no surprises there. Millennials cited weed and wokies as their #1 reason for voting in Trudeau and as a bloc have elected Trudeau 3 times in a row. Demographers now show that millennials now do not support Trudeau at all and their support for NDP has gone from 24% to 22%. So looks like it's time for the Conservative phase to do an 1980's boomer style Reaganite War on Drugs/Tough on crime/Greed is good soap opera.

Nah man. I was in Toronto a decade ago and two decades ago, and while they’re always seedy neighborhoods, it was never THIS bad.

Like it was a livable city.

Now? Fuck no. Nevermind all the crazies, the homeless people and the constant plumes of weed smoke.

It’s also increasingly an unlivable city for normal people. Family member of mine pays 1200$ a month for a bedroom without a kitchen. (And it’s the latest rental building on the street. All around it, condos that nobody can afford are being built.)

Took an Uber, and the driver started talking about how he and his wife have been working full time for years, to save up money for a down payment for a house. Still can’t afford it. These are people in their thirties and it’s not even in Toronto but south of there near Niagara.

Canada is fucked man. Unless you already have yours, you’re screwed.

There are not really any government gibs in Ontario. The most a person could get from a welfare payment would be 700 dollars and if they're homeless it's about 300. Obviously no one will ever find housing on that. After the Harris cuts in the 90s unemployable people learned it was far more lucrative to sell drugs. And so it began..

The homeless stuff in Toronto mentioned above is because for actually mentally ill people and addicts there's zero intervention. The jails are full, which is why so many of them are released probably the next day. Police intervention can't deal with everything especially when there no place to put the criminals. Jails are literally bursting at the seams right now. Courts are so backlogged so a lot of cases are being dropped.

Ontario doesn't really fund anything lol. It's a free for all here.

People disagree or think it impossible/impractical but I suspect the government will criminalize VPN usage someway along with other methods to change your IP.

It's not super hard when the whole country only has 2-3 ISPs and mobile providers and most of the world outside Canada will gladly just block Canada a la Facebook and Google.

Canada is about #2 for internet addiction rates worldwide outdone only by South Korea so this kind of tampering with the few pleasures people have left may get some degree of pushback.

I don't think banning VPNs is even possible from a technical standpoint without making encryption illegal.

If I have an encrypted connection to a server in another country over an obscure port, they have no idea what that traffic is. It could be a VPN, I could be connecting to my company's FTP server, I could be just playing an online multiplayer game.
