@Jetpack Himmler (Couldn't directly quote);
Perhaps in hindsight, it's not so much a psychotic break, but reflective of how the wider North American Left (of which the Canadian Left is joined via umbilical cord) was already primed to act- no doubt the Left would have treated McCain the same way as Harper if he had won instead of Obama.
More likely outcome- The Toronto Star/CBC: "These poor immigrants need more programz and accelerated citizenship and family reunion!" (Insert quote about the awful, awful lives these immigrants live by an immigration lawyer/immigrant advocacy groups that totally have no conflict of interest.)
And it's not even the some neon-soaked cyberpunk corporatist future, it's going to be a gay late-Soviet DIE-1984 corporatist future decaying through the competency crisis and entropy (dressed up as 'saving the planet'). And forget private roads, it's going to be the privatization of existing public assets and the creation of decentralized corporate fiefs.
Also an interesting reflection in terms of Rob Ford, and the pre-Trumpian populist right figure he cast on the city along with the left/The Toronto Star losing their minds over it.My personal theory is that Stephen Harper's rise to Prime Minister broke the Canadian left because I remember how the chimped out over every small thing (like $16 glass of orange juice) and made repeated claims that he was a petty dictator. They had long upheld the myths that Canada was a progressive utopia that could claim moral superiority over the United States, the Liberals were the natural ruling party, and that the NDP was the conscience of parliament. Dion and Ignatieff were unable to unseat Harper so the LPC turned to Justin Trudeau because of his family name among other superficial traits and elected him leader of the party in 2013.

FIRST READING: Rising numbers of new immigrants hate it here, want to go home
Hopefully more will take the hint and leave. The federal government scammed them with promises of a better life and only wants to exploit them to keep this Ponzi economy going.

The reality is that for all the whinging and gotcha quotes about Russian oligarchs, corruption and their living conditions, much of North America is already almost there, and in some cases like overdose/suicide deaths, shooting past Russia. The only difference is that it's dressed up via PR/law to not look like a problem- especially the corruption.I honestly think the west is headed toward this weird corporate autocracy where government becomes extremely weak and ineffective, and gigantic global corporations wield an inordinate amount of power over day to day life. For example, roads getting built and maintained through public-private partnerships where a private company gets paid by government to build and maintain a road. That company gets bought by Google or Blackrock or some shit and all of a sudden Google or Blackrock is in control of your road, and one of the snow clearing shifts gets cut to help fund paying dividends to shareholders or to pay for diversity initiatives.
