it's abnormal they did it in Canada

Literally its been going on since before this nation was even a thing;
not going to get to Latin America, but it was (and still is) quite huge there. Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and parts of Brazil still have massive jesuit communities with the natives. Old pope Francis was Jesuit, even. They also have jesuit schools there, and had similar programs.
It doesn's matter who ran it, it didn't work.
I'm not even going to get into this because in the 60s and 70s something like 96% of Canadians, including natives, were Christian.
Obviously its convoluted now- but the Jesuits and Catholics did a pretty bang up job, if your prerequisite for things working being 'conversation' to Christianity.
Today you have a lot of atheism and autistic 'new religions', which are just reinvented wigwams and what have you, but like, no man- the Jesuits were very, very successful in what they did.
The British preferred apartheid systems, that's why Canada today is a segregated racialized clusterfuck, couldn't be bothered to assimilate people, just put them in boxes.
The British/Canadians preferred that Indians assimilated. This is so wrong. They gave them the option of staying on reserves or joining the rest of society, and encouraged them to leave the reserves. This is why you have so many 'natives' today who are basically white, because their ancestors actually left the reserves.
Yeah, cause everything was just peace and harmony before the evil white man came.
Give me a fucking break.
Exactly + we have a lot of historical revisionism from the left wing about the way Canadians treated natives when:
Except for BC (special case), treaties were pretty much followed to the T, you didn't have random native wars like in the US, everythings documented, and the government actually had a lot of involvement in native affairs and tried to do things well, and organized. Arguably, they did. Sucks that things didn't work out for the natives, but 'its all white mans fault, mass graves everywhere' is a false narrative. Yeah, they got a raw deal- but thats more from a hunter gatherer lifestyle not working in modernity, and much less to do with the governments actual efforts to help them. And they did try, and do still try, I want to emphasize that.
