Cancelled Games You Wish Had Been Released - I Can't Think of a Good Subtitle

Re: Babylon 5
There is a playable E3 Demo, but they lost live action footage of the cast doing what amounts to another season of the show. Dam shame.

They lost footage again? That's the explanation they gave for the fact that in the DVD release of the series with improved/remastered SFX, all the scenes that combined live action footage and CGI looked terrible compared to scenes with just one or the other (i.e. exterior shots, space battles, etc., vs. scenes aboard the station, other ships or planetside). They'd lost a lot of the masters and had to work with lower-quality copies of the shot footage. They also apparently lost most (or all) of the original CGI models and textures and had to recreate them from scratch for the DVD release.

They've apparently got butterfingers, constantly losing really important stuff, and terrible backup procedures.

That show was fucking cursed, man. One of the best shows ever made, and it just never got a fair shake. So many of its cast members have died, too. Steven Franklin, G'Kar, Vir Cotto, Michael Garibaldi, Jeffrey Sinclair, Zathras, Zack Allen, William Edgars, David Sheridan (John Sheridan's father), Benjamin Kyle (the doctor from the pilot, "The Gathering") ... all gone :(

Dead Rush

It was being developed by Treyarch. IIRC it was supposed do be their next game after Spider-Man 2, but then they decided they would make more money on Ultimate Spider-Man.

It doesn't really look that great, but at the time there weren't a lot of Zombie open world games so I was hyped.

Sleeping dogs sequel, that got scraped by Square Enix in favor of turning it into terrible MMO, that had never made it to alpha stages, then got canceled with the studio shutting down soon after. Call me a sperg, but I will never forgive that. Sleeping dogs originally was called True Crime: Hongkong, but due to low sales of part 2 was put on hold until THQ died. After that United Front Games was bought by Square and released what they had as Sleeping dogs. These people made it through so much, just to be destroyed by some executive's decision to make a MMO, that nobody'd asked for.

Project Awakened. Yeah-yeah, Kickstarter trash, but I had high hopes and it was the project of people from Midway. It could be like Prototype, only less edgy and with a gameplay.

Captain Blood. No, not the DOS game, even though this one is even more obscure. On the one hand, I would've loved to have an action adventure game with over-the-top violence, combos and crazy sea battles. But on the other, it had 1C as publisher, which is never a good sign.

Jason Bourne: Tredstone. Even though it would probably be a console exclusive, I would love the world to have this game, but man can only dream.

Funny thing, this game was actually finished and all fully done. But! Two things have occurred, there was apparently some issues with publishing the game and 1C couldn't get oversea's publishing deals. But! Because of all this shit that went down, some dude in the company actually deleted the whole game from the company servers and all they had left were older versions that would mean the team would have to start again to finish it.
Captain Blood is now on a Russian torrents site.

BTW, if the game doesn't start & gives an error then download "physx_9.10.0513"

Also, to the change the game's language, you need to start the game at least once & then exit it. In the documents folder, find the Captain Blood folder, & "engine.ini" folder, & in the localisation line, type "eng" instead of "rus"

I wish we had gotten Will Wright's original vision of Spore. He had wanted to do something that was based on science with gameplay that was more complex and would give players a different experience every time they played. The game even had an 'aquatic stage' planned between the cell and creature stages. However it had to be dumbed down and made cuter for mass appeal as per EA. A lot of the content was cut out, and as a fan of god games I can't help but wonder what could have been.

The dick monsters and memes were great, though.
Spore has got to be one of the biggest divergent points in gaming history, that game very easily could have changed everything I feel, but EA fucked it in the ass and the rest is history.

I think it's a similar deal with the Spielberg produced game LMNO, another victim of EA.

Basically I feel like around 2008 when they talked about gaming going "mainstream" that could have been a good thing and not a bad thing, I can very easily imagine an alternate scenario where gaming going "mainstream" made everything better and not worse, there was some real potential around that time, but greed and political correctness ruined it.

The fact that an innovator on the level of Will Wright fucked off out of video games speaks to how in some ways fundamentally broken video games are as an artform, there's just so much potential being wasted it boggles the mind when you imagine what could be.

Greed is such a terrible thing that is robbing us of what should be a much better world than it is, that's true not just of video games but of everything.

Well, after a brief Google search, it seems, that Routine has been one of them for over two years now. Fuck, and from the last post on their website it seems, that game was almost finished, just needed some balancing and polishing.

RIP in space, sweet prince.
This one really hurts too.

There were a couple games on the Wii which got cancelled which I was kind of excited about. Sadness and The Grinder.

Most of you probably know about the former, pretentious looking horror game solely in black-and-white featuring some sick looking monsters. Can't remember the story why the company went under but it's a shame it never saw the light of day.

The Grinder was apparently gonna be some Left4Dead inspired game, only replace zombies with vampires and werewolves and maybe some other cryptids. Was one of those weird people who enjoyed FPS games on the Wii, so I kept an eye on this. Sadly, thing was shelved and has a few assets just rotting away on some server somewhere.

They never had a game and after 3-4 years of development that is very, very bad. It seems like the successor to that developer is Bloober Team and their walky-scary games.

Perfect Dark 2.
I liked Perfect Dark, but Perfect Dark Zero was awful. Going for a more mature, sci-fi tone could have been fantastic. Unfortunately, the game never got far into development.

Cheating with this last choice. Dinosaur Planet.
I know Dinosaur Planet came out as Starfox Adventures, but it was shallow with some forced Starfox stuff that seemed out of place. While I liked Starfox Assault, the series has been mishandled after that. I would like to have seen Rare's take on Zelda-like RPG genre during their prime, but it was not to be.
MS is doing a PD reboot. Maybe it'll be good?

And since this post, DP leaked. Seems really good aside from the limitations of the n64. Would have killed to see the whole game ported to the GC at 60fps.
Castlevania Resurrection for the Dreamcast.
Apparently that is out there in some form. Someone is hoarding it.

edit: it got leaked. nvm. https://archive.org/details/castlevania-resurrection-dreamcast-e-3-pre-demo-pack.-7z

Infinity, for the Gameboy color. I have a soft spot gameboy color games, and would be happy if we never left that era.View attachment 1427456
Apparently getting a release. https://www.infinitygbc.com/

Primal Rage 2 kills me. Autistic af for dinosaurs, that first one was my fighter of choice, had the toys. I remember the previews of 2 and.... It just never appeared.

Saw that nasally voiced wha happun guys video the other day and seeing Midway just drop it in favor of keeping room for MK4 and fucking War Gods of all thing was like a gut punch.

Silent Hills-I just want a franchise reboot that isn’t complete shit like the last game, Downpour, was. I want hope for my favourite video game franchise.
It's been kind of fucking cruel to be a Silent Hill fan, first we had to sit and watch as the series became shitty, then the one glimmer of hope was cruelly ripped away.

The cherry on top being that we're fast approaching 20 whole years since the last great game in the series (Silent Hill 3)

Just why? Why did Silent Hill of all things have to have such a shitty fate? It deserved way better.

I just thought of a great example, The Crossing by Arkane studios.

The game was a crazily ambitious cross (hence the title) between a multiplayer and single player game, basically if you were playing "single player" instead of fighting AI NPCs you'd be fighting actual people controlling the enemies through the multiplayer.

The storyline was really cool too, it involved a war between two dimensions, near future dystopian police Paris (sound familiar) and a crazy alternate history world where the Knights Templar took control of the Vatican and Paris in the 21st century is now some weird pseudo medieval city with steampunk elements.

I can see why it didn't pan out because that was such an ambitious idea to combine single player and multiplayer like that, but they should have reused the alternate history setting for it's own game and that's kind of what they actually did, if you look at screenshots and concept art you can see a clear as day influence on Dishonored, but in my opinion the alternate history idea is cooler, especially as The Crossing was going to be a source engine game than a UE3 game.

The irony is the reason the game was canceled was so that Arkane studios could help with Spielberg's LMNO another canceled game I wish had happened, so we just got basically nothing out of that deal, what a shame.

For another example there's the original Deus Ex 3, Deus Ex 3: Insurrection, another prequel like Human Revolution but pretty different than HR, while HR was pretty good the series petered out under Eidos Montreal and it would have been nice if Deus Ex could have stayed in Warren Spector's and Ion Storm's hands.

Wait, it’s been 20 years? Shit, I feel old now. Personally I liked all the games up to Homecoming, but that’s probably because it was my first and I have some sentimental attachment to it. Shattered Memories and Downpour though, my god, they were terrible. I just want the rumours about a PS5 exclusive silent hill game to be true but I don’t have any hopes for it.

Not quite 20 years, I was referring to Silent Hill 3, which is coming up on 18 years old, still a little while till it's 20 but not a long time and since we've never had another Silent Hill game nearly as good as it since it's depressing to think how close it is to 20.

Even Silent Hill 3, as great as it is, is a little flawed because it reuses some assets from 2, so for a truly great Silent Hill game that was all new start to finish it is indeed coming up on 20 years since Silent Hill 2 and that is just insane that we've never gotten another game on it's level in almost 20 years.

I didn't think Shattered Memories was terrible, it does some interesting things, it's the only western developed Silent Hill worth a crap, but it's well over a decade old now, so it's been a decade+ since there was a Silent Hill game worth playing and now we're approaching a decade (9 years to be exact) since there was a Silent Hill game period.

In other words the franchise has been dormant for way too long, it's begging for a revival (although only if it's done right of course)

To make matters worse the best versions of the old games are long out of print and only going up in price, while there are the PC versions they've not gotten any official re-releases (save for 4), this makes the barrier of entry pretty high for newcomers, considering we're talking some of the great games of all time this is an absolute travesty, it's like if Citizen Kane was only on VHS.

Starcraft: Ghost. I was really looking forward to a action shooter based on the Starcraft lore.
