Car Thread - Alfa Romeo proves cars are art so shut up

I've been a lil interested in cars for a bit.
This started as a '29 Hudson sedan. Underdriven 6-71 Dyers, 331 small block Chevy, Muncie 4 speed, Radir wheels and Duece front axle.
Under construction I've got a '39 Willy's sedan that was crushed into a pile of scrap on a river bank that's now a pickup. Just got it fired up in the past two weeks.

It also doesn't help that auto makers made CVTs mimic automatic transmissions by faking gear shifts, which defeats the point of using a CVT in the first place. (Other than it being much cheaper to produce than other automatic transmissions) Although Toyota's newer CVTs also have a fixed first-gear, to aid in going from a stop, along with the fake shifts. And not to mention how Toyota created an unholy hybrid of a transmission for their Lexus LC and LS hybrids, where they put a CVT together with a 4-Speed automatic transmission, to make it mimic a 10-speed automatic.

I guess you can blame it on people that don't know how CVTs work, and complain about engine droning noises on CVT-equipped cars that don't use stepped/fake gears.

Oh god that sounds like it'd be wretched. Either that or it'd drive fantastically. Either way, I've never heard of such an arrangement, ever.

Somehow I don't feel as bad about my lowly 4L60-E...

Speaking of which, during the service which went very well, I/we discovered evidence that this box has been removed from the car before. No idea if it was out for the rear main, or if it was either rebuilt or replaced, but there is evidence of transmission jack markings being left on the pan.

Also, the magnet is incorrect. It's very possible the original one broke and was replaced during service, they are pretty damn fragile and do stick to the pan fairly well, so that's always a possibility there. But the box has most certainly been out before for some reason. I just don't know why.

But eh. It shifted ok before the service, and shifts great after the service. Theres no trash in the pan, and the yield of metal grease is fairly average to low, so I'm happy about that.

None of this particularly worries me, it just makes me curious as to what the story behind this was.

Hey, so you know how RCR makes too many furry jokes to not be a furry? I found his old YT acc. Talks about furry shit, has a furry animation, and has probably went to antrocon with his friends.

Archive of all his videos.

My bae, Acura RL (2002). An old fart's car (technically) but pure class. People who see this car admire it's luxury (albeit late-90s/early 2000s). Will not give it up:

CVTs are horrible blights on humanity. In their true form the droning sound will drive you mad, even in the best case their MPGs are no better then a well tuned automatic's due to the CVT's inability to put down torque resulting in longer acceleration times in real life scenarios. And they are some of the most unreliable shitboxes ever produced.

Nissan's CVT are some of the worst. I subconsciously have a negative bias toward Nissan drivers (bar the GTR and 350/370z) cause they're absolute shit cars even when new.

It's amazing how a company can get 4WD and RWD so incredibly well, then completely fuck up something that should be so simple

You can thank Mr. "Le Cost Cutter" Carlos Ghosn for that. Although it could have been worse, imagine if Nissan was able to develop a CVT for RWD/AWD applications, and then put them in the 350/370Z, the GT-R, and their trucks as well... Now that's an abomination that I wouldn't want to imagine.

My C10 has been down for nearly a year. I went to crank it one day and right after it hit there was a pop that sounded like backfiring through the carb and it started acting like it was missing. No more weird engine sounds after that though. I checked to make shure I was getting spark at every cylinder first because that is the easiest thing to do and all was good there. Next was the test where I figured I would find my problem. I checked compression and all cylinders had good even compression. WTF. It seemed like a bad miss so maybe it was running on four cylinders. I've seen it happen a couple times. So now I go into the carb. There are fine rust particles in the bowls so I figure that is where my problem is. I go through the carb and put on a new fuel filter. No change except now the water pump has decided to leak. God damnit fuck this I'm about to do a LS swap anyways. I'm about to do a ls swap anyways turned into getting busy with other work so fast forward to yesterday. I'm missing my truck and I have a little bit of time. I pull the valve covers to see if anything is fucky wucky with the valve train. I would expect the compression test to have been off if that was the case but I'm out of ideas at this point. Everything looks normal, but the battery is dead and I want to see the valve train in action. The battery won't charge. I take it to the parts house to get it warrantied. After installation I get one of the kids to turn on it as I watch looking for anything weird. Eventually fuel gets up to the carb and it starts and my kid feels proud of himself. I feel full of disappointment. WTF again. I happen to look down at the correct angle. Why the fuck is my fan clutch bent. I whip into action and pull it and the fan real quick and get the kid to crank it up again. I work the throttle from under the hood and this bitch will roar and purr again. Two nuts had worked their way off of the fan clutch and apparently when I started it that one time the torque from the engine suddenly firing was enough for it to bend making the pop. I rushed to get parts and after a hundred dollars in parts, several hours of work, and a twelve pack of beer, I had my truck back. Me and the kids gave her a bath this morning and I tore up the roads between here and the gas station to get her some fresh fuel and my fridge some fresh beer.

What oil do you guys recommend (filter included). I got my oil done at Express but they screwed me over when I wanted vavoline and they gave me fram oil and cram filter, fucking retards. I’m thinking of doing my own oil for once and using Royal Purple oil and filter. Any recommendations for a ‘07 Dakota 2wd?

I used to use AMSOIL in everything but now days I just use whatever cheap blended synthetic my local auto parts store has in stock as far as filters Ive had good luck with ac delco stuff or any oem product. But one time I had a napa filter have a bad crimp and it leaked so I stopped using those. I believe its better to use cheaper products and change it more frequently making sure to keep and eye on my levels regularly. I kept AMSOIL and factory filters on my old mr2 just cause I wanted to use the best in it.

Makes sense, I use the exceptional method and assume every product with a racing stripe is the best.
